With the arrival of my second child earlier in the year, it became apparent that we needed a larger family car. Before the purchase, my fleet consisted of my Mk3 Leon cupra hatch which I had turned into a semi clubsport spec track car/occasional daily, and a highland Tesla model 3 standard range in ‘leasing white’. Turns out a saloon gets filled with kids crap very quickly when going away for a few days! I was also getting fed up with my mk3 cupra as it was a bit compromised for road use.

I was therefore in the market for a fast estate, as I had no desire for an SUV. I looked at a few options before this popped up on Autotrader,

It’s effectively a Golf R wagon, but more spec as standard in this vz2 (one from the top spec). It’s got the latest revision of the ea888 with 333ps. I think it’s a great engine (I’ve had 4 of them over the years)

Ex dealer demo. 9 months old, 6k miles, much cheaper than the 51 grand (!) list price. Leather, pan roof, etc etc etc.

First impressions are good, DSG is nice and crisp in sport+ effortless pace, significantly more refined than my old mk3 and a 600l boot. I think I’ll keep it a while. It sounds a little asthmatic under load, maybe due to the gpf euro 6 stuff but it is what it is.

I’m going to try not to modify it… much (I have changed the wheels) I might take it on track once or twice…

A picture at home after collection. Swansway cupra Oldham were good to deal with. More to follow…

I really like these, can you spill the beans on what % below that phantom list was possible? Still the irritating luxury car tax though I suppose....

As I mentioned in the first post, I have changed the wheels. The standard ones in my opinion are a bit fussy, and also diamond cut so will likely corrode quite quickly.

I wanted to keep it looking oem, and the warmenau alloys off the mk8.5 golf are a current favourite, so when CM wheels launched the replica warmenau wheels I was very happy.

I have used CM wheels before and so have many others for their Pretoria reps, of course they’re heavy (although in my case lighter than the standard alloys) but I’ve never had any issues, plus they use the OEM nuts and the correct centre bore, so no spigot rings are required.

Choice was diamond cut, or black. So I went for black.

I’ll be the first to admit I am no fan of black on black in general, and chances are I’ll change the colour in the near future, but I don’t dislike it…

The ‘just washed’ rusty brake disc kind of spoils it. I had some custom centre cap stickers made up for them:

The first wash of my stewardship

The interior is quite nice. The pan roof makes it much lighter inside, the seats are very comfy and the front isofix point has proven useful.

No haptic buttons, and the infotainment has been improved from golf 8/mk4 Leon. There’s now shortcuts permanently on the screen for climate control. As I also own a Tesla I am used to touch scheme dashes, and whilst I would prefer buttons, this is fine. Standard stereo is also very good.

I paid just under 34k. Yes luxury tax but most things I was looking at qualify these days. Even a Skoda Octavia vrs with no options is over 40k iirc!

Unfortunately, whilst having the new wheels and tyres fitted, the tyre fitter selected R instead of D and reversed it into a wall, causing nearly 4K worth of damage.

New boot trim, rear bumper, bumper trim, badges paint and labour required, plus having the inconvenience of having to get it sorted anyway.

Hopefully get it done around October time.

FFS, what a nightmare!

Congrats on the purchase of the Cupra. I had a leased previous gen 2020 Leon Cupra ST for 3 years and my wife and I still miss it as it was such a brilliant all-rounder. Such a punchy engine and I never got bored of using the performance, so in the 3 years I had it I didn`t see north of 30mpg very often biggrin

With regards to the wheels, I wonder if some Cupra bronze accents would offset the black a little.
