So back at the start of the year, with my Focus ST in the garage with all sorts of horrific coolant leaks, and our Mercedes A180 emitting some highly suspect smells into the cabin, a decision was made to dispose of one car and acquire another.

I popped to my local BMW dealer, looked at a few cars, ran some numbers, and at the start of the this month, the Mercedes made way for our new machine. A M240i in the lovely Thundernight Purple.

In the last month or so we have driven a smidge over 800 miles, and the 240 is consistently impressing. I had my reservations about the all touch screen setup and ADAS beeps and bongs but once you get set up these really do cease to be any sort of issue to worry about.

It's now in desperate need of another wash and I'll be looking to get some sort of coating on before start of the colder months, as we do have some longer roadtrips planned around the UK and longer term some trips into France.

So far the car has been unerring in action and I'm looking forward to getting it onto some better roads to really start to lean on the cars performance.

Cracking car. I’m looking at Z4s at the moment and Thundernight or Sanremo Green are top choices.

I think the frozen green with the tan interior would be my pick with the Z4!

That's lovely. If only I could justify replacing my Focus ST with one!

Luckily I've managed to keep our ST (which is a 2012/13 mk3), I bought it 4 years ago on 25k miles and its now approaching 71k. Recently I've had all sorts of coolant leak issues though and I felt I need to recoup the repair fees with some miles which is why we got out of the Merc!

The 240 actually seems to be more fuel efficient (than the Ford), which is a pleasant surprise.

Absolutely lovely! That colour is just fantastic cool

A friend of a friend has one of the earlier 240i's - he had a more recent M2 but it was sold on to fund the starting of a business and he's said quite a few times now that he much prefers his current 240i - says it just rides and handles better straight out of the box (although he has fitted B16s to it and a few other upgrades)

Only drawback is it’s a very recent colour so there’s none more than a year old.

And not many of them either!

I thought Thundernight on the 2 would be a lesser chosen option but looking on AT it seems to be very popular!

I forgot to list the spec in my OP, Alongside the Thundernight we went with the Tech/Comfort pack, Sensotec black, Elec seats, Heated wheel, Harmon Kardon, Adaptive suspension and the Sunroof. I would have perhaps like the 893M wheels but at the time you had to take a load of other bits to get them, with the recent engine update it looks like you can now add them independently!

Sorry to hear about the coolant issues! I really enjoy mine, well I did until recently. 2015, Mk3.5, owned it 9 years and have put on 260,000 faultless km's. Clutch went last month which resulted in a huge list of findings (not to mention the box having to come out twice due to an issue). But now after disturbing all the front suspension twice over the span of a few days, it's all starting to feel very tired! As much as it pains me, I can't really complain having spent minimal on it until this point but the idea of an entire front end rebuild after an already huge bill is making me look elsewhere.

What are you getting fuel wise in the m240i? Thanks

On the coolant I've had new tank, new radiator, new heater matrix... lots spent for no real 'gain' (well aside from not killing the car). I did seriously consider chopping it in but given how much it's worth it wasn't really worth it. I think mine will be needing that refresh soon too!

On a longer motorway run I've seen 42mpg and I wasn't really trying. Averaged 31 over ~500 mixed miles last month according to the app.
