Last night, there I was, stopped in my lane just around a corner to allow the person pulling out of their driveway to continue their movement.. next thing some one comes barreling around the corner and slams into the rear of my Mondeo. Officially a write off. insurance company took one look at the photos and deemed it unrepairable. So late last night looking through classifieds I came across this.. 1993 940 2.3HPT SE

It needs some work: the centre exhaust is loose and tapping on the floor at idle. The heater only produces lightly warm or cold air. There is no radio. The whole centre console which holds the radio is missing. The Park release button is a little stiff. The brakes work, but according to MOt advisory are pitted. The propshaft centre bearing needs replacing, as does the gearbox rubber mounting. And the cambelt needs doing. but it ran fine on way home for an hour, apart from once cutting out at idle and then immedietly starting back up with no issue. Overall not a bad shed

Sorry to hear of the Mondeos demise, but a nice 940 is a great car, I've had several and still have a late 960, currently not in use, I'm sad to say!

900 series volvo are bloody good cars, sometimes all the car you need. I know many people who have bought one as a stop gap and the gap has ended up being many years....

Superb car biggrin My Dad had a white 940 Turbo which went like you know what off a shovel laugh

It was that and his V70R that I learned to drive in, in the late 90s (and my Mum's Micra Colette hehe

Parallel park a 940; you'll park anything... Literally wink

Looking forward to this thread progressing

Drama of the day: opening up the bonnet I noticed that the top bolt for the cambelt cover was hanging a bit loose and looking like it was about to drop out. Picked it up and heard a little tap tap tap. The damn sleeve had dropped off the bolt and fallen to the bottom of the cover. At least I think it did, 'twas not on the road or the undertray or the crossmember. No way to get at it without the proper tools. So in the morning will give the local mobile mechanic a bell and have him come around with a magnet and a camera to see A) if it really is at the bottom of the cover and B) if it is fish it out...... aaah well.

A pal had one of these when they were 'new'...and I drove it quite a bit up in St Andrews.
They are great cars, his was an auto which had some sort of overdrive button or something on the selector...( it was a long time ago...)

As has been said, the turning circle is amazing, and they are great to drive. Very '80s' interior, but well put together.

And now the restoration begins. Car is getting picked up this morning and taken to garage for the initial basics- Brakes, cambelt and new propshaft centre bearing. That will ensure the motor is relaible and working as it should. Next step will be to sort out the wiring.....

taking into consideration the heavy stereo wires in the rear end of the car, previous owner must have treid to install a high end sound system.. and in the process just f**ked everything up. The bezel around the instrument cluster and the cluster itself are both loose, and as you can see the wriing has been messed with.. A new 3D console frame has been ordered and is on the way, I have the ashtray, just need to ensure access to the fuses and the OBD....

I'm pretty sure the OBD on those was via a fly lead and flashing led under the bonnet, they are pretty basic and most issues will have been come across on the Volvo forum, the guys there were very helpful and knowledgeable and a few have serious stashes of spares!

I had a good look at this lot. There are clearly wires that are not original, the purple and green ones for example. I think some of the relay cubes are not original and should be removed, plus some of the scotch blocks look like they are vampires ,sucking power from something else. Perhaps to power immobilisor or souind system? anyway when motor is back from surgery to replace cambelt and slip in a new propshaft centre bearing, the wiring is the next job,. Then Ican fit a new frame and install a single DIN radio and the requisite 1990s ashtray.

Good to see a 940 getting some love - we had an LPT a few years back (and our neighbours still do).
The only reason we moved it on was the lack of towing capacity, but it otherwise ticked every box. I'll second the fact that the Volvo forums are great, I think there's someone they're that sells the OBD interpreter as well (they are too early to use a modern reader on).
From memory, the blocks are extremely strong (and non interference?), but prone to crankcase breathing issues.

Keep the updates coming please!

so ... here we are, the 940 is back from its first garage visit under my ownership : Timing belt, aux belts, water pump and tensioner, 4 new tyres, front brake pads and discs, exhaust hanger replaced, all fluids apart from gearbox changed. The propshaft needs either replacing or repairing, the centre bearing is toast, but the join is not visible and they suspect it has been replaced with a single shaft prop, which is possible. Alongside a new steering rack Classic Swede are sending me down one in decent shape. The mess that is the wiring is slowly being sorted out.... while exploring that mess I discovered that the instrument cluster is not fixed in, just placed loosley within the cowl.... that might be the reason the speedo is erratic.... also the fan appears to be not working, going to test in the morning. The idle stalling is still occuring, a radio suppression relay is on its way alongside a fuel pump relay and a new Idle control Valve... In the morning I shall have my first expedition into the wonderful world of OBD-1, which needs no tools, just push the jumper cable into a slot and count the dashes ,,,apparently smile

soo the old dear has been stalling intermittently at lights.. first thing to do this morning put in a new Radio Suppression relay, which is the cause of some of the stalling issues on these. Apprently quite common. Of course there is no bracket on the wing to clip these into so cable ties will do for the moment....

and after three days of water leaks, went out in it this morning, no leak ...? perhaps after not being used much by the previous keeper, the seals and gaskets were dry?
