Hi all,

Picked up this MGTF recently and decided instead of just fixing it and moving it on, I’d document the whole rebuild properly.

Plan is to go through everything step by step:
– what’s wrong with it
– what it actually needs
– what it costs to sort
– and how it turns out in the end

Nothing fancy, just a proper honest look at bringing one back.

I know these cars have their issues so should be interesting to see what comes up along the way.

If anyone’s got experience with these or things to look out for, I’m all ears 👍

I’ll update this as I go.

Fair shout – here’s a couple from when I picked it up.

Bit rougher than expected in places so should be interesting 😅

Going to start stripping it back properly this week and see what’s actually going on underneath.

If anyone’s had one apart before, anything specific I should look out for?

Good luck, should be an interesting thread.
Do you know what issues it has?
I'm guessing the usual corrosion, neglect and possible HGF...

I had an MGTF for a few months a couple of years back. I thought it was a nice little thing for the money. Better than a similarly-priced MX5.

I’ll get some photos up shortly once the forum lets me 👍

You have to click the upload button to upload images in posts.

Smileys from your phone don't work on PH for some weird reason.

There's a brace available to stiffen up the brakes, which are st as standard. The pedal box is attached to quite a weak part of the bulkhead which flexes when you stamp on the brakes! There's also big brake kits as you'd expect.
Alternators can go, you can do that through the (left?) wheel well.
I believe there's a common failure of the heater pipes front-back corroding, though I didn't have that issue.
Head gaskets can go (mine didn't) because BMW cheaped out on materials, but a mutilayer one is available. You need to bleed the cooling system properly.
People going "K Series head gasket hurr hurr" gets tiresome.

OP Joined 28th April - there will be a waiting period before photos can be uploaded - not even sure the Moderator team can change that time period

We might have to wait a while

Because they aren't formatted in a way that PH can handle wink

Oh, ok, OPer said, "Here are photos" <nothing> so thought he was having problems with the upload.

Sure it ll be good fun. I ve had 2 TFs. On my current one I ve done most things: suspension, brakes, cooling, door hinges etc etc over the last 6 years. Happy to offer any benefits of my (limited) experience.

Simple enough to work on. Lots of guides still online on old forums and easy to get parts. I d recommend DMGRS for spares.

First thing you might want to check is the mud trap behind the front arch liners.

Here she is at York Racecourse back end of last year.

And aforementioned mud. Covid hit just after I bought this so I had some nice lockdown afternoons tinkering.

I’ve been looking into these a bit recently as they seem to be everywhere now.

From what I can tell, the key thing is whether they include a skill-based question or offer a free postal entry route — otherwise they fall into gambling rules in the UK.

Some look properly run, others feel a bit rushed.

Be interesting to hear if anyone here has actually won one?

That seems a bit off topic, but I assume you are talking about those online raffles.

I've bought a few tickets if the prize is something I would love to own, but never won. Although I have met someone who won a BMW Z4M Coupe a couple of years ago.

They really have aged well.
Good performance and small enough for our back roads. I’m guessing plenty of spares available. They look great in any colour.
