Hi all, thought I make a thread for anyone interested in Volvo oddities.

Just picked up last week, only covered 33k Kilometers., located in Thailand.

It is a Volvo V40 T5 in Biarritz Blue with one of the final years of the 5 cylinder turbo engine (code B5204T9 - 2.0 liter) putting out 213hp and 300Nm. 6 speed Aisin auto box. There was a big tax penalty on anything bigger than a 2 liter engine (and 220hp) at the time, so Volvo offered this in Thailand / Japan / Malaysia amongst others to come in under the limit.

I also have a G7.5 2.4 Honda Accord here, which is a great reliable car, but not particularly quick. The plan was to swap in the higher powered K24 with some go faster bits but with communication issues and some workshops / tuners seemingly not desperate for work I decided to look for something else. The Thai car market is quite insular, and many of the models offered domestically are lower powered - so anything interesting or imported commands a big premium. I wanted a reasonable amount of power and a nice place to sit, and didn't want to pay too much for it so this seemed to fit the bill.

It is a 2014 car, and in Thailand they only got the T5 in petrol guise. The 2.0 5-pot got a slightly smaller bore than the 2.5 version offered elsewhere, and was destroked. This makes it an oversquare design so makes less peak power higher in the rev range than the 2.5 (6000 vs 5400 irc.). Apparently the smaller bore is beneficial in that it has thicker cylinder walls than the 2.5, so less risk of cylinder liner cracking, is reasonably unstressed and puts up with higher boost remaps well. Whether I'll test that or not is yet to be seen, but already been looking at DO88 bits!

It is in great condition, very comfortable black leather memory seats, excellent Volvo High Performance sound system, BLIS, Active Bending Xenons etc. Makes a great noise too!
This is the lower of the two trims offered in Thailand so misses out on the digital dash, lane keep assist, auto park and radar cruise - most I can happily live without to be honest, but compared to a UK car quite highly specced. With it's 16" wheels it is quite unassuming and catches the odd tailgaiting pick-up truck off guard.

It's a great long distance cruiser for a smaller car, offering good midrange in sport mode so truck overtakes are less of a stress. It gives reasonable performance on a country road too, being based on a modified Ford Focus platform with torque vectoring helping out. A Golf GTI or a RenaultSport Clio would be much better on a backroad, but they don't have any of them here and it wouldn't be too embarrased either.

Just had the cambelt / waterpump/ aux belt done as preventative maintainance and the dealer sorted out a couple of sensor issues, so fingers crossed will do good service for a while!

I have the Aisin 6speed box in my my12 S80 D5.

Its the weakest part of the car imo and id be worried about doing anything non standard with it, although remapping a twin turbo D5 the torque just destroys them. Even I standard form, when hot it does a hard shift and can be a bit shunty.

I was actually looking at an S80 and test drove a 2.5FT one. I think I have the slightly updated version of your TF-80SC (TF-80SD), but am pushing quite a bit less torque through it, so wouldn't be too worried with a remap.

I did read it is quite a bit slower than the newer 8-speed, but generally reliable, and much better than a Powershift.

For me it is adequate if you accept it is an older box, and in sport mode not bad at all. Not sure if the shift mapping is different in the S80, or time takes it's toll, but the gear shifts feel noticably quicker in the V40 than the 2011 S80 I drove with 100k+.
