I am probably long-overdue writing a Readers' Car thread for any one of my formers cars, but this seemed like as good an excuse as any...

A change in work circumstances meant that we were looking to jump off the PCP/lease train for 12 or so months and get something lower cost and sensible to truck the family about in. We'd had an E70 X5 a few years back so initially I looked at the F series but they were all a bit meh tbh and after about 4 minutes of considered reasoning, the sensible and obvious choice became the FFRR.

There are a couple of very useful Readers' Cars threads on here featuring these so I fully place the blame on this forum. With a few weeks of reasearch I had a list of wants and needs. Budget was up to £15k, it had to be the SDV8 and I wanted Vogure SE or AB for the Semi-Aniline leather and additional touches that these spec came with. I didn't want black and ideally wanted the 20 inch style 502 alloys for the ride. The hunt was on.

The cheapest 4.4SDV8 on Autotrader at the time was only 10 miles down the road (high mileage, missing history etc.) but seemed worth a viewing at least. This promptly sold which was probably a blessing as it was only a Vogue. Trawling Facebook I then found what looked like a great example. Vogue SE in Indus Silver, full history and only two owners. It was on 22's but had tyres, discs and pads in the previous 12 months. Pics from the advert below:

It looked immaculate inside, and the couple selling were wonderful to deal with. A date was arranged and I headed up to Bury St. Edmunds on the train to view with the goal of taking her home that afternoon. This was early October, so the weather was still incredible and the owner collected me from the station, top down, in his XK8 - the signs were good.

Back to theirs and the car presented well, all documents in order and everything working as it should. We sorted the funds and paperwork and the car was mine! Turns out the owner was a bit of a collector, having recently sold an XK120 and XK140!

The driver home was 140 or so miles and an absolute pleasure, quiet and comfortable whilst returning 39mpg. I used the VIN to obtan the origina build list which is below. A few nice features for me and the family - clear glass, rear entertainment, fridge in the armrest and upgraded (I think) seats with the headrest cushions (this has been edited to make it more digestible and I have omitted the 'less' otions). I did want park timed climate but the hardware is pretty much there to retrofit.

There are a few areas to address:

The front grill is a facelift version as the original was worn / damaged. I am unsure if i like it so might source an original. The 'Range Rover' badges front and back are worn so replacement Chrome ones have been ordered. Whilst the clear glass is nice, the kids want some shade so blinds are on the menu. The rotary gear selector is also worn (sticky plastics) so I tihnk a knurled AB style one is in order also.

I cannot see a Garbox flush, though i need to re-read the history, so perhaps a fluid change will be on the cards also - oil was done only a few k ago.

Overall I am really impressed, for the money (all things being equal) it seems a bargain. I will endeavour to update with the above asap!

Great buy, lovely looking vehicle.

I also had an E70 X5 which our family loved, no need for a big car now, but I still look, not sure I can get past the potential bork factor though.

I'm looking for a winter vehicle as the fun car is being SORN in November, perhaps some man maths hehe

Keep the post going

You need to get the panoramic roof drains checked. They corrode and the pipes drop off, this then floods the car and ruins the electrics. I made 3d printed replacements and sealed them in. It’s a common problem so get a specialist to check them or pull the panels off the trim around the sunroof and check them…it’s quite hard to spot.

Search Updates by Bodsy. This is a mobile guy who can do transfer case, gearbox and diff oil changes.

Also join the FullFatRR forum is you haven’t already done so.

Enjoy the car!

In a previous job I used to deliver to a customer who had an identical car.
I always thought that in silver with those wheels, it looked rather tasteful in a discrete way rather than an all black one like many are.

Can definitely recommend getting the gearbox, transfer box and diff oils all changed.

Have the same colours on mine and did the wheels silver. My ones are the bigger turbines but I couldn’t refurb them in diamond cut as done too many times so I went full silver and it looks really good to me.
