One Owner 981S
Discussion
It s rare I post on Ph these days, in fact it s rare I come on PH these days. I m not sure I ve ever posted in this section over the years,
But ..today I was washing my Boxster S and felt the urge to share it. I ve owned it since new in September 2012 and after driving it for a month (it s been my winter daily since 2014 taxed between October and April) I m reminded what a great car it is. Yes I have more exotic cars, rarer cars and dare I say, more interesting cars. I ve got faster cars, cars that make me say Wow! when I drive them, things that look stunning and things that entertain me. But they also have flaws. Too big, too firm for UK roads, have to stop to put the roof on, might not make it to my destination, no boot space, no aircon and so on.
The Boxster though is just, well, good. It never blows my mind, I never say wow, but I often smile, often pat the steering wheel after making good progress down a B road and it never causes complaint.
It s quick enough, comfy but capable, good fun, sounds great, practical, easy to park, roof goes up and down on the move (ideal for a winter sports car in North Yorkshire), 2 boots, sports seats but heated, everything works and its nice to be out in but doesn't attract too much attention (not that I get negative attention but I m prone to break onto car conversations when approached which can annoy the missus). It s also cheap to run and maintain and you can take it anywhere and it works.
Shopping? No problem. Weekend away to a nice country hotel with your wife? Looks the part, comfy and fits the luggage in. Touring Europe? Comfy on the Autobahn and good fun in the mountains. You could, although I don t, stick a set of track wheels on it and have a decent enough time on track if you wanted.
Plus, it’s hard as nails. Now 14 years and 2 months old and 45,000 miles and still looking tip top.
Anyhoo, just felt the urge to say. :-) Thanks Porsche. I ll never sell it.

Good write up for the humble boxster, sometimes the car you use in all weathers/all the time is the best car you own. Someone who use to post on here used his 987 spyder as a daily some 120k miles , used as Porsche intended which is somewhat lost on some of today’s models and owners.
Great write-up. 45k miles is barely run in for one of these! I've a one-owner 718 Cayman bought new in 2016 that I'd never sell either. It's past 80k now and I keep renewing the warranty without a second thought. Brilliant cars, and comfortably the cheapest I've ever owned to run.

Fine. I jack it up every month and jetwash underneath. Largely because the first year I didnt and I double stack my cars in my garages. It dropped salt all over the car underneath so I took it off, cleaned it and have been doing that ever since.
None of my other road cars, except the SUVs, come out after October until April.

Nice. What is the underside like after all those winters?
Respect for the monthly jetwash routine, but mine doesn't get a winter-only life. It's used all year round, salt and all, and is well past 80k miles. It lives in a dehumidified garage so it dries out between runs, and it's been trouble free. Porsche have galvanised their body shells since the mid 70s, which helps a lot, though I'd still keep an eye on the suspension and brake lines. These cars are tougher than you might think! I'll save hosing the underside until the spring.Laying the others up from October to April seems a wasted opportunity though. Crisp, dry winter days are some of the best for driving!
When you have 15 cars you can t drive all of them all of the time.
Plus 6 of mine are classics/vintage and really don t want to be on British winter roads. 2 are supercars that tour Europe at least once each every year and I pretty much use as dailies through spring and summer. 2 SUVs that are year round, one Lwb Transporter that s for mountain biking all year round (and goes to the alps/dolomites each year) and a track car I track from February to November.
Then there s a big saloon that I use for specific trips and the Porsche.
The only car that I never drive is an m3 that I ve owned for 19 years from new and just own for nostalgic reasons now.
I ve been retired since I was 45 and spend a lot of time driving them all, except the m3.
But the point was that the Porsche is a superb car even when it lives alongside what would be regarded as superior cars.

Wholeheartedly agree with your sentiments. We've had our 2.7 981 Cayman for 11 years from new and it gets used throughout the year rain or shine alongside a more practical dog wagon. I doubt we'll ever sell it and if it gets to the point we can no longer drive our son has made it clear he'd be happy to take on the responsibility of looking after it. Hopefully we're a long way from that
