Project E36 - Track Day Car
Discussion
Been building this car for a while now. Probably only a few weeks until we finish and get out on track
The car is a 1991 325 E36 Saloon - one of the first E36’s, which has the non-vanos M50 engine. We bought the car as a trade sale for £700 after struggling to find a sub £1K coupe. The car when we bought it was basically sound and it appears to have no major mechanical problems. It has done just over 100K miles and had been regularly serviced by BMW up to around 80K which is encouraging.
The intention is to build a track day machine which wont be used on the roads. Because we have access to a car trailer and have a 4x4 to tow it, for now the car wont be MOT’d or road legal.
Our basic alterations will be:
1. Strip out interior
2. Tidy up bodywork under car
3. New suspension - KW 2 way race
4. New brakes - AP 4 pots front, stock rear for now
5. Multipoint cage - supplied by Custom Cages
6. Competition seats and harnesses
7. Cold Air Intake and general service for now
8. Prep bodywork and re-spray.
9. New wheels & Tyres - 17x8 Racing Dynamics Pro-Race 1.2’s probably on slicks.
10. M3 engine when our budget allows. Probably next year.

PART 5
Took a break from fitting the cage (it was starting to really p*ss us off!) and fitted a new Peco DTM style back box. Not the best or most expensive out there but since we want to drop in an M3 engine there seems little point in throwing money into an exhaust at this stage. Looks good anyway!
You can also see the rear wing that was fitted as soon as the car was in the garage!

PART 14
Waiting for some brake lines and wheel studs so we can finish the brakes and suspension; fitted the most expensive towing eye ever while we wait for them to arrive. Slight error in location at the first attempt as you can see. Measure twice, cut once! We also cut a few holes in the trim so we can whip the bumper off quickly.

Are you looking to go into some form of motorsport in the future or is it purely for trackdays?
Probably just track days. The lad I'm building it with used to race Formula Fords and you need quite a budget for a season, even for club racing. Plus I'd be gutted if we wrote the car off and I had to do that bloody cage again
