I don't think that they are under-rated. Evo gives it 5 stars (+ everything - Nothing) and it was Top Gear car of the year. Anybody who knows anything about steering feel or handling rates them very highly indeed.
Those that don't rate them know nothing about cars.
Enjoy it mate - it will give you plenty of smiles per mile.

the ST170 conversion is a straight swap
Really? I've yet to see one. Links if you have them please!
. Don't be tempted by conversions. One of the keys to the Puma's handling is that little all aluminium Yamaha developed 1.7L sewing machine between the front wheels. Do not be tempted to shoehorn Duratec Pig iron into the car - It has been done but is a massive job and I believe requires longit mods (that's the cars crash structure by the way). Leave it standard - put some Michelin Pilot exalto's on it all round and scare some pretty tasty stuff on any local B-road twisties. These are great driver's cars

Pumaspeed build the kit for the D.I.Y enfusiast or drive in drive out. Personally I wouldn't either but to each their own. The Puma was car of the year in 1997 (I googled it when owned one).

ST170 engine is basically a straight swap, its the engine that mine will be getting, pumaspeeds kit is for the st150 engine in the fiesta st, that requires custom mounts and stand alone management.
2.0 is the way forward for the puma, its what it should have got from the start, the 1.7 is a good engine but its just not gutsy enough, and its not hugely tunable, can be turbo charged but its quite weak and wont take a huge amount of boost

Keep the 1.7 otherwise you will upset the balance with a heavier engine it will understeer and lose the magic that the Puma is known for. You can apply upgrades that Ford used for the racing puma for more go and then add some throttle bodies........
Surely the main upgrade is suspension/handling/wider arch (thus wider wheel base), perhaps 16" wheels, I am sure it is all listed with a quick google...Gassing Station | Readers' Cars | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
