Well after years of buying a variety normal cars, some faster than others. I eventually got the car of my teenage dreams. The top speed is immaterial, however it is kart like around corners and the number of random waves I get from people is amazing (and no not the coffee bean one). So the weekend summer toy is sorted at last

The wheels are replicas of the Speedwell BRMS. Not quite the Flat Four items, but close enough for me. Just need to raise the back by about an inch and fit my Turbo Trap muffler when it arrives and I'll be even more happy. Also debating whether to fit the side chrome trim.

It's a 1600cc engine with unleaded heads and a Weber progressive carb. The front has been dropped a fair bit using a puma adjustable beam, and a new heavier duty roll bar fitted. I would love to say I did the work, but the car is a testament to it's previous owner and his work.

As with everything, I want to make a few changes with that car, as mentioned above, a slight raise at the back and turbo trap muffler are first on the list. There are a couple of spots of rust, so after the summer it'll be into the garage to sort out the spare wheel well and a bit on the drivers door. Currently the bug is fitted with drums (wide5 drums at the front), however I am tempted with fitting some discs all round from Machine7. The reason is to do a bit of future proofing incase I ever get round to fitting a more powerful engine

Had a nice day out with the folks driving to Glamis Castle. The Missus headed straight for the MX5, but there is no chance i'm changing to one of those from the bug.

An update if anyone is interested lol

When I bought the car i was that the spare wheel well needed some work, so with one of my mates, we cracked into what we thought would be a simple task. However when we came to weld the new plate to the front valance we ran into trouble. A fair bit of filler had been used at some point in the past and we couldn't find any good metal to weld to. So after a moments thought I decided to order a pile of new metal and replace the lot.

Whilst waiting for my package to arrive, I stripped the wings off and removed the vin plate etc before attacking the bug with the angle grinder. A couple of days work (it would have been done in one had Iain not run out of gas for the welder) and following happened:










Then it was rebuild and paint time:





After this was a few weeks on pootling around until I decided that twin carbs would be a nice little project. So some twin Weber 34 ICT's were bought. A quick strip ensued (beetles are so easy to work on )



Then rebuilt in time to enjoy some sun
