Hello, new here, my Golf Mk4.
Discussion
I admit it's nothing overly special but i though this would be a good place to start.
I'm a medical student at the Exeter Uni and am 19 y/o - so yep, being 19, i'm quite smug about having a Golf compared my Saxo/ Clio/ Corsa driving mates - although it does make me the default driver on longer journeys or when there's 4 passengers in tow.
It's a 2001, 1.8 (don't ask about my insurance premium...), bought as a birthday present for me before i went back to uni for my second year (cracked out some nonsense frankly to my parents about needing a car at uni - i don't really to be honest, but it has it's benefits with certain impressionable girls (ahem...))
However, it's had it's fair share of problems:
~Week 2 of ownership: Radio went bang, replacement etc was £200 - but now i have ipod connectivity which is a definite bonus.
~Christmas Holidays: NEW ENGINE!!! - my mother managed to flood the engine - have a look at the "my garage" history bit of my profile, it's discussed there - and the pure comedy that is the bill is posted below...
~Last week: Rear suspension creaks, especially with three rugby players in the back... - new rear axle bushes - £215, and hence why in the pictures below it's so clean. the garage valeted it: we live in rural Somerset, the car will be beyond filthy within a few days.
~And as i say, insurance costs are a sky high at my age, let alone on a 1.8 - we looked at a 1.6, but felt it would be underpowered on the M-way
As for other cars, the Golf is my second car, i had a Renault Clio 1.2 "Club Med" - Whatever the feck "club med" means? - not going to lie, pretty damn awful, but then as is a right of passage for 17 y/os, i promptly crashed it into a ditch on a mates farm whilst having a cheeky race with a Saxo VXR - we considered using a tractor to pull it out, push it onto the road and then push it into another ditch and then get the insurance, but as it was probably unbelievable and worth approximately £3.46, so we just scrapped it.
My dad's has a 58 Bimmer 530d (company car)- dullest of the dull - in grey, non M-sport and a diesel with cream leather...
Mum's got an 02 Range Rover - they live in Somerset, where the lanes in winter are just not gritted and she does a bit of horse box towing
(if you want pics of them two, holla, but why you'd want pics of a grey BMW saloon is beyond me, Rangie's OK though)

you think its better than a saxo/clio/corsa? better inside maybe but worse handling and much more problematic maintenance wise.

that era of vw`s were particularly bad and reknowned for costing a fair bit to constantly fix. congrats on your new car though, but are they 11inch rims?

I do happen to think it is better than those little hatches (i'm 6"3' - maybe that has something to do with it) - and yeah you're clearly damn right on the maintenance front, i make no qualms it's been far from reliable in every respect
(not wishing to big myself up) Girls do prefer it - but then again, as you hint, it could be 'cus it rides better and is nicer inside than equivalents, which may be sportier.
The Bimmer in my opinion is dull (ish) Yeah it's a nice car, but quite the generic grey saloon.
As for the rims, i'm not a fan of modding, and if you lived in pot-holed ravaged Somerset, you wouldn't either, you'll ruin the wheel/ suspension/ your back round here with big alloys.
