Aries Locost GSXR
Discussion
I did post a topic with my other cars, but I can't find it and I wanted to post some more pictures of my project so I thought i'd start a new one
It had been a long term project I started 7 years ago at the ripe old age of 12. Spent a couple of years on it, got a bit bored, bought other cars and ended up hillclimbing a 205. Last year my dad and I decided it was time we got something more powerful and RWD, obviously the Locost was perfect. We decided we'd get a new chassis from Aries Motorsport and do it properly.
The day the new chassis arrived:

Oil cooled GSXR engine going in:

Some panels going on, me looking chuffed:

More panels and suspension:

Outside for the first time:

Making 205 GTi brakes fit:

Going for it's exhaust:

Bodywork:

Arches:

Going for suspension setup and cornerweighting:

Chopped and baffled the sump:

Baffle plate:

First outing at Llandow:

Retro rides show:

Out at Shelsley on the 19th, can't wait
Obviously it wasn't all that plain sailing, using the oil-cooled GSXR engine made things interesting, as well as 205 brakes and lots of other unusual parts.

Cheers guys, it's brilliant fun but a tad scary. 122bhp at the wheels (about 145 at crank), 450kgs, 0-60 in 4 secs on warm slicks (according to racechrono)... although i've only done it once and it scared me witless
I've still got a lot to learn about it, it'll be a while before I get it's full potential!

Looks great Adam.
Do you mind me asking how much the build set you back?
Oooh umm, if I told you i'd have to shoot you. In all honesty I have no idea and neither does the bank manager (mum) and that's the way it should probably stay. The wrong side of £7k for sure.Do you mind me asking how much the build set you back?

Looks like even more fun than a Fritzel family gathering
Hopefully will be there on the 19th too see it run.
Also, got the brackets for my seats today
Oh god, I thought I was past the Fritzel jokes!

You should definitely come along, there's always some awesome cars there and they have a pretty good bar too for those not competing for a spot of lunchtime beveraging
Good job, I still need to get a passenger ride in the 5! Pictures when you get them in please

Well it's been a whole year since I updated this thread and a lot has happened! Highs (my first class win) and lows (BANG cccrrrrrrrrr oops).
Have some pictures from the last 12 months:
Final sprint of 2010:

Before it came apart again:

Spring rates changed, stainless crush tubes fitted and FARB fabricated:

Refurbed wheels for wets:

Testing at Llandow:

Then midway through my 2nd run of the 2nd day at Pembrey the main shaft became two:

Whoops!
Sourced a temporary (read shagged) engine to complete the season but that prompted the purchase of a GSXR1216 engine (160bhp ish) which will be going in over the winter.

Getting very wet at Llandow:

Llys-Y-Fran where I managed my first class win

On the start line at Prescott for the RR gathering:

Also did shelsley walsh again last weekend and heading to curborough in 2 weekends time... then she comes apart again!

Plans for the winter rebuild include:
1216 engine
Protech dampers
Wilwood brakes
Avon slicks
Caster adjustable F/U wishbones
Rear ARB
Diffuser/flat floor
And possibly a lot more depending on how much time I have. The downside of working full time for the year is barely any holiday

Oh how times change. I'm completely used to it now, I find myself doing a Jezza C impression, grabbing the the steering wheel and shouting 'COME ON WHERE'S THE POWER!'

I love this car. It just looks so 'right'.
Great work
Very jealous that I don't have the time/space to do a project like it!
Thanks a lot! I felt that it was one of the best proportioned seven replicas. The sierra based ones (MK Indy, MNR, Mac1) are all too big and ugly.Great work

Out of interest how much would one of these cost to build?
Awesome project BTW
That depends on the spec. I'd say to do it properly and put it on the road you're looking in excess of £10k, although you could probably lash one together for £5k if you tried hard enough.Awesome project BTW
