Jeep Cherokee 4.0 Orvis
Discussion
After a request in the Off Road section here are some details of my Jeep.
It's a 1999 4.0 Orvis that I bought 18 months ago on a bit of a whim. I'd always liked the XJ shape Cherokee and had a Fiat Barchetta at the time that was great but was about to cost a lot. Cherokees are so cheap now I figured I'd find the best I could. After a bit of a search I came across this beauty. It had one owner from new, 70,000 miles with a full service history. It had actually been serviced every 6 months or 3,500 miles! It was, naturally, immaculate throughout. The Orvis is the top spec Cherokee with every option as standard. I wanted the 4.0 as it's such a great engine and gives good performance.
As it was when bought:

As you can see it looks a bit weedy! After much research online, mainly from the US where modifying Jeeps is much more popular, I decided on a lift and bigger tyres. Lifting a Cherokee up to 3 inches is relatively straightforward but there are lots of different ways to do it. The difficulty is that most of the kits available are in the US and the shipping of suspension components is not cheap. I went with a Rough Country kit and bought it from Llama 4x4 who were really helpful. I sourced rear leaf springs from Mansfield Off Road as that saved on the shipping. The kit included longer shocks too. Tyre wise I went with BFG All Terrains as they seemed to get the best reviews for a combination of on and off road duties.
Here's the result:

Overall I'm delighted. I've taken it on a few green lanes and to a pay and play and it's more than capable for what I need. I'm reluctant to do anything too adventurous as I don't want to damage it! On the road it feels a bit less chuckable since the lift but still pretty good.
Let me know what you think...

It's been completely reliable so far. About 16mpg around town to 23ish on a run.
Have you considered an lpg conversion or are you happy with the economy?Harry Flashman said:
Iam actually on the lookout for one of these, and would like similarly to lightly modify it. Great looking car! Is it OK on the motroway with the lift kist?
Sorry to butt in, but brothers seems perfect for m-way stuff. Tyres hum slightly, and 80 really is getting to the point of buggering up mpg, but i was very impressed

Excuse my ignorance - is it a V8 in there or a V6 ?
Straight six, I think...
