Mk1 golf 16v turbo 4x4 project.
Discussion
This has to be one of the longest builds of all time! I have owned the car since 1989 as a standard 1.6 gti, one owner from new. I then buggered about with it as you do with a bbs bodykit and in 1992 a 2 litre 16v engine with ported head and schrick cams. That was quite cutting edge then. Since 1996 it has been on and off the road with various 16v turbo engines, non particularly sucessfully.
A couple of years ago I bought a non sunroof shell and started a ground up build. The basic spec is as follows
Acid dipped non sunroof shell
Fully seam welded with custom cages cage
Four wheel drive conversion
Lotus Elise rear end incorporating double wishbones and Haldex diff with manual diff controller
Custom propshaft and drive shafts
New 16v turbo engine built by AMT Engines in Chesterfield.
Arias forged pistons
Carillo rods
Modified 20v block to take gas flowed and re-worked 16 v head.
2 litre balanced crank
Modified head ( flow bench tested flowing 130cfm on inlet and 100cfm on exhaust.
Supertech valves, lifters and retainers
Garret GT2540 r roller bearing turbo on tubular manifold
Modified cosworth plenum
RS 500 size throttle body
Custom inlet manifold
Radtec radiator and intercooler
Audi S3 gearbox and rear diff
Uprated helix clutch and lightened flywheel
Electronic power assisted steering using AMT ecu controller, adjustable for assistance
Pipewerk 3 inch down pipe and system
The car is being assembled by Jeff at Pipewerx and will hopefully be finished Spring 2011

This is the rear end. Diff not in it on this photo

I also have had fitted, elise GT spec rear hubs like these ones

I have used performance trim carbon bonnet and boot but had them painted for a more standard look.

So you've had a new shell, engine, transmission and rear suspension, what is left of the original car? Just the front suspension?A couple of years ago I bought a non sunroof shell and started a ground up build. The basic spec is as follows
