Golf Mk1 Driver ongoing project
Discussion
I bought a MK1 April 09, heres a cut & paste of my project diary from my local VW clubs. So-wal & Newportedition
Heres how it was:

But When I collected it had standard suspension due to tyres scrubbing with the lows.
It was ok in the usual areas:

So off I went with APJ to collect it being towed back with his trusty 1.2 Clio. Was an adventure to say the least & on the way back the brakes siezed on but with the power of the clio I didnt realise at the time. Unfortuanately while it was being towed the bar went through the front panel
Heres how it looked a couple of days later after I polished it:

I wasnt a fan of the side trims so a trip to Geezers emporium sorted me a set of gti upper trims plus some decent doorcards & repalcement front panel(this still needs doing).:

At the same time I changed the front calipers with goodridge braided lines:

With my Dads help & some info on mk1oc I swapped the weber carb that was on there for a brand new one the same spec & re jetted it for 1300. Then while waiting for the carb jets after a wasted journey, the inlet manifold was refurbed along with a few other bits:

While it was still jacked up the lowering springs & shocks were refitted with a couple of spare wheels on the front with proper size tyres:

Finally the carb bits arrived but still it wouldnt idle, I missed VFW.
Then at Ed38 show 09 Ryan(Boxxer) scored a bargain with a VDO centre console:

I bought some corrado seats with Nafes help we went upto Tonypandy & collected them.
I Tried to get my schmidts fitted all round but they only fit on the rear so heres how it looked:

And recently I took it to Avia Autos & they solved the carb problem, I had the wrong fuel cap, the solenoid wasnt a permanent live earth & the timing was slightly out(180 deg).
So to celebrate it I bought a radio for looks:

And in the snow:

The indicators were playing up since I washed it but Geezer came to the rescue again, he ripped half my dash apart (3 screws), unplugged the wiring & put it back together and Hey Presto they work Happy Days.
Now all I need are my Schmidts to be refurbed, new tyres & the welding.

Couple more randoms, had the spare bonnet on for ages as the original was rusted underneath. So before it had the front panel fitted the original bonnet was refurbed.
Fisrt it was cleaned & kurust:

Then it was painted with 2 cans of red hammerite:

and reassembled:

While bonnet was off more rust was dealt with:

Spare washer bottle was cleaned & fitted:

And the rear of the cylinder head was cleaned:

New washer pipe:

Rad brackets being blasted, should be back & sprayed by sunday hence cable ties ^^^
Still needs a full underbonnet cleanup but its alot better.

Horrid winter wheels on Nov '10:

My mk1 is on the calender for 2011, look in the topleft 8-)

Then the gearbox broke late Nov '10 and with the weather not driven it since
Late Jan '11 got motivation back, 1 down, 3 to go:

Others done, no pics yet as its all up in the air awaiting gearbox change. And thats how it is at the moment. More progress as & when.

very nice mate, not sure about the wheels i appreciate that they are Schmidts but unsure on them possibly the colour, also get the dent in the wing pulled.
Cheers, wheels in my opinion suit the look as its stripped out inside but going all sensible this year, putting interior back in there. Wing will be sorted soon aswell but priority is getting it back on the road at the moment.Cheers all, makes all the effort worthwhile
not heard the shaggy ones for ages, since the mop chop.

Any plans for the engine? Puppy Power!!!
Polo GT(75bhp) conversion due in the next couple of weeks, then going to save for AFH 1.4 16v to be different plus a few tweeks to that but looking at a 5 year plan. Its a small block that's how its staying, despite alot of people saying I should KR it.

Easy swap, if you want to keep it Carb, use a ford XR2 carb on the Polo GT engine. Gives it a great torque kick. Otherwise stick with digifant. 1400 16v swap is a straight forward one too, 1600 16v Polo Gti one a little tougher, due to a few bracketing/locating issues.
Everyone goes on about drop in a ABF or KR, though would mean relocating the engine mounts on yours. Its good to see something different, makes you stand out.

What binnacle are you after??
Looking at some on ebay that are ending soon. After one for my model, 1982 1.6 gti s2 (direct injection) The connection for the battery LED has gone, the car should send the current to the led then to the battery to say its good to go. Me and my dad are trying to get a fix for it. Will let you know how it goes. i am also on the mk1 forum
