My "new" golf gti

Here she is ladies and gentlemen, my new pride and joy, new best friend etc. She's a 1988 golf gti16v in blue, fitted with the rare bbs body kit and sitting on bbs alloys, been lowered about 40mm and only done 91,000 miles. drives like a beast, feels really planted compared to my wallowy a4 and seems to have bucket loads of torque in any gear at any revs. needs some work doing, getting the cambelt changed in the next week, the bodykit needs some firbeglass work doing to it, or i may pick up one on ebay but they seem quite pricey due to their rarity and a few surface rust spots need dealing with along with stone chips on the bonnet. over all though for a 22 year old car shes in pretty darn good condition, heres some pics. i dunno about the leather, was it an option back in the day? leather door cards too, maybe an interior swap at some point but what ever it is the interior is in wicked condition.

I love this, it's so 'period correct'. I think the leather, the body kit and the wheels are all factory options. I know someone I can ask and I'll come back to you.

Once i've sold my audi im going to fully restore her. I love the dub scene and some of the modifying is stunning eg some of the euro look etc. I shall however be bucking this trend and keeping it original. anyone know if its possible to order original dealer plates complete with the old style fonts and logos etc? to keep it properly period.

Apparently that's a BBS kit which was a factory option as are the BBS wheels and the electric windows. Can't tell if the leather is factory but it could well be, apparently sometimes the dealers would to arrange to have that done themselves by local firms.

I doubt you can get period style plates but I suppose you could always put the logos and text together in photoshop, print it out and ask the people who make the plates to put it in. I've had a quick look on google images for the right logos but no luck, might have to scan them from your service book or something. By the way don't do what I just did and search google for VAG at work!

The wheels are BBS RZ and would have come from a Corrado at some point.

Thanks for the info guys most appreciated. yeh its got the leccy windows too, i've been googling about the bbs kit but very little seems to be turning up. just booked the cambelt in for next week so that'll be a big load off my mind

That looks lovely

BBS body kits were more conservative than the offerings from Kamei and Zender back in the 80's but don't look nearly so dated now. To continue the theme you should try and hunt down a period BBS steering wheel - always wanted one for my old MKII GTI but they were a very costly option when new.

lovely looking car there mate, I still have a soft spot for the bbs bodykit. It doesnt looked as though its been messed with either, even the steering wheel is correct, nice find, enjoy it

thought i'd post a lil update. The Golf is amazing, it absolutely love it. I treated her to an easter was and polish and thought i'd take a few pics





whilst polishing i thought id remove the rear spoliery thing, the paint had started to crack and fancied a change, it looks way cleaner without it (more performance too now that i've shed a few grams)

What a stunning car. I looked at getting one of these earlier this year, but I just could not find a good one. I looked a few, but they were all rusted, tatty old dogs. The insurance was not cheap for a 16V either, the 8V was pretty reasonable but the 16V was something like £52 for 1bhp that the 16V had over the 8V, when I compared by two best quotes. In the end, the Cupra R I bought instead was cheaper to insure than the 16V gti, madness!

Lovely car though mate, seriously nice. Whatever you do, don't "DUB" it, enough good cars have already been lost into that hole!
