OK, here's the sorry tale

I parked the 944 in a 'safe' place in Richmond near the Thames. Guess what happened next....lunar eclipse, ubusually high tide, closed lock gate......very wet 944....Bugger

I've dried it out...cheers for the dehumidifier Russell.. and got it started. It runs quite badly and some electrics are playing up but since I practically had to steam clean the starter motor to get the oxidisation off I guess all the electrical contacts will need a pretty good going over.

The insurance company want to write it off so here are the options:
- retract the claim and pay to get it sorted myself (don't know if I can do this, anyone?)
- take the insurance pay out and walk away
- Take the insurance, keep the car and sell the bits (shame, it was a nice car)
- keep it, buy something mundane and make a fast road / track car

If the last option, where to start and how much, bearing in mind the remedial work to electrics as a starter?

Thanks in advance....

Last option, defo. You should be able to buy it off them for sod all.

You should be able to 'trackify' it pretty well for about 3k, at a guess.

They'll write it off as Cat A and may not even offer you the salvage back. I hear that someone recently paid £11k for a 993 with water damage - he's going to track it so doesn't care.

I had a mate who bought a car that was Cat D - had been water damaged and incorrectly categorised - even though it was just a Citroen ZX, the insurance company took it back and crushed it.

I can only guess that its the water's effect on the safety elements such as airbags that account for this zealousness.

They've already told me I can keep the salvage

No airbags and such like with a 944, so thats a bit easier

How does the category system work? I thought that Category D for instance was less serious than category A...is it the other way round?

Cat D is less serious - something like "can be repaired safely" or somesuch. Cat A usually means "should be crushed" I'm sure there are more accurate words, but the meaning is the same

Take the money and keep the car. Then break the car or sought it and sell it. Water damage takes time to resolve but not too much technical know how. Maybe give it to a deserving godson.
Which 944 is it. I might buy some bits.

If I decide to break it Andrew, I'll let you know. But I'm reluctant to go down that route unless it becomes an absolute headache to get the car running properly again.

Domster, where to start with getting some track type bits?....and Iguana if you're reading this I fully expect to see you round at my place over the weekend!!

Although that will probably be more along the lines of... 'Sharp, put the spanner down and step away from the car!!'

Jeez, now there's a can of worms.

The trackday bits question is a thread in itself. I'd suggest you'd want to find:

(very rough estimates in brackets, you may need to source some of them second hand )

- a roll cage (600 GBP)
- buckets (600 GBP a pair)
- harnesses (200 GBP)
- a big bin to put most of the interior in (ie carpets, sound deadening, cupholders etc. ... 5 GBP)
- 968CS dampers/ARBs etc. (800 GBP)
- Big red brakes or equivalent (1000 GBP)

That's about 3205 GBP, you may be able to do it for less.

I would check out all the Porsche dismantlers, and ring up some of the Porsche racing teams and see if they have any spare bits to scrounge. Some things like roll cages will have to be bought new.

Cheers
Dom

Ok so to put a more budget side of the equasion to Doms-figures, which given value of car are rather too high IMHO to spend on it-

Cage- forget it, nightmere to get insurance with it anyway.

Buckets- can get Cobras etc from £150 each, I like Recaro pole positions myself at £300 each.

Harnesses- £80= pair of 2inch 3 point.

Big bin- free= use the wheelie bin

Big reds- bit excesive, either recon present set up & new discs track pads for somat like £200 or plus new calipers= bugger all somat like £80 new! or good step up= S2, 968CS (not MO30) fronts sub £200 or 964rs from £250. (both may need some engineering faffing about to fit tho)

Rebush suspension- £100

Braided lines- £60

Extra oil cooler- £150

Suspension do 968CS shocks fit early 944s? different front set up I think. If not some Koni shocks & aftermarket springs/torsions & 968CS ARBs or posibly a Leda set up £800 area seems fair.

Even more weight loss pos by getting GRP rear hatch & bonnet approx £600.

So all in all bargain much cheapness

There will however I promise, be numerous odds & sods that you will need that can potentially bring the price right up & remember if you are trashing the sh*t out of an 18yr old car on track something is guaranteed to break unless you replaced absolutly everything.

So get it done in a month & come to the 'ring with some of us*

*ahem- says the man whos own cheapo track slag wagon is currently engineless & with only 4 weeks to go may yet have to hire somat....!

The car being an '86 all post 85.5 struts are interchangeable, consideration of spring diameter being excluded.

You may have to precise wether you're refering to M030 968CS shocks or non-M030 968 CS shocks, as they're different and the spring diameter is not the same ; non-M030 968 & 968 CS suspension parts are the same except the springs and ride height.
[/Mega ]

[Hyper ]
By the way, M030 Koni are basically the same between 944 and 968.
Non-M030 944S2 & 968 & 968CS have the same spring diameter and same ARB.
[/Hyper ]

I'd buy the car off the insurance and sell the parts to fund a 944 turbo track car or get another 944 Lux and keep some of the parts when things will break down.

I compiled most S2/turbo/968 suspension datas on this page

I always knew Thom was more of a 944 expert than Alex. In fact, it seems that I am, too!

What a nice dilemma "not reading the warning sign" has given you.

Thanks Guys

I knew you wouldn't be able to stay out of this discussion for very long Alex!! If you're looking at being car less, what better incentive to get round to mine and help fix the 944??? Then you can take it to the 'ring!

Thom......are you sure it's healthy to know that much?

Seriously, thanks for the help

Cyrus, thanks for your input.

However there is no warning sign where I parked.

As for a nice dilemma, fear not I'm still heavily out of pocket

Better now?
