996 Service Intervals

Just to clarify, what exactly are the service intervals on a 996 turbo?
I have been told that for 2001 or 2002 cars they do not need to be servciced more than every 2years (unless doing more than 12,000 miles in that period).
Is this correct?
I was under the impression that this only was true of 53reg onwards.

The Porsche website states every 2 years with no mention of pre/post MY2004 differences, which is a bit confusing as my old 2001 C4 service book stated annual, which is what I always adhered to.
I spoke to a specialist last week regarding my 2002 C4S who stated every 2 years is fine 'as that's what Porsche recommends'.

There is so much confusion around this. I wanted a difinitive answer. Apparently the service book states only annual inspection is required for 2001 cars for example. Not really sure what this means to be honest. It states oil or larger service is not required more than every 2years. Confusing!!

It suggests the OP's thoughts are correct, but only "Annual Maintenance" is required after 12 months (if noe many miles are covered) which is little more (less?) than an MOT and level check.

On a car like this, and especially a hot running turbo, leaving the service 2 years is crazy in my book.

Exactly my thoughts - at the very least the oil should be changed annually. Surprising that Porsche set these intervals - usually stealers always do what they can to force us through the doors.
thegoose - thanks for that pdf - useful, still not sure exactly what 'annual maintenance' is seeing as oil change is not included!

I change the oil/filter in my Turbo (now with over 67K miles on it) every 5K miles (and ditto for my 02 Boxster with over 244K miles on its original engine) and treat the cars to 2 year brake/clutch fluid flushes/bleeds, a transmission/diff (manual) fluid change every 30K to 40K miles (last time for the Turbo a transmission leak was found -- selector shaft -- and the transmission was replaced under warranty).
I change the engine air and cabin air filters every year or so and every full set of tires (about every 30K to 40K miles I have the car's alignment checked/set.
BTW, I 'know' of a Turbo owner who has covered over 300K miles in his Turbo (I forget the MY) and the engine is still running strong. And he changes or has changed the oil every 5K miles.
2 years service intervals... No way unless you hate your Turbo.

On a turbo at least every 5k mileage - forget the schedule. It costs you less than filling the car up with petrol these days to do an oil change so there are no excuses.
Whilst it may not be a fact, after stripping two 996 turbo engines down to the crank in the last month, both with similar mileage, the one that had very little maintenence on it (and I mean very infrequent oil changes) had the most internal damage. The other car had no damage at all, with the oil having been changed on average less than every 5k.

I can't see where it says 2 years. There's a "typical" timeline which shows a 2 year example but that doesn't necessarily apply to all 996s.

Apparently not....given the link quote & my 2002 C4S manual says annual. Who is this "specialist"? Did you tell him that your manual says 1 year?

Well, I agree with the above and serviced my 2001 C4 every year/12k anyway, but the fact is other people seem to be confused by Porsche.Who is this "specialist"? Did you tell him that your manual says 1 year?
