Have any of you seen a 912 in the flesh? I saw one in London the other day, and...well, what can I say...I don't know what year it was, but I think they only made a small range - Best looking Porsche ever?

Do you really mean 912?

Pretty much same exterior as a low rent version of the 911, which is exactly what it is, only using a 4 cyl engine.

Pre impact car '65- 69 used 1.6 356C derived engine.

Impact bumper car '76 used VW 2L engine (as used in 914)

Hardly Porches greatest hour.... & the later car (only made for export I belive) is particually unloved, although for the early cars= arguably better handling than early 911s due to less weight hanging out over the back & if engine is played with can give early non 'S' 911s a hard time, still sound like an old beetle tho

I think I mean 912..I'm not sure! lol! Does anyone have any pictures of them?

I wasn't really talking about it's performance..Only 'cos I don't know that much about it, but the shape was to-die-for. Like I said, not sure what year it was, but it's the most attractive Porsche chassis I've ever seen.

But it looks just like an early 911.... (or like an impact 911 for the later car) do you mean 914??

Pre impact 912- (in this case a targa version)

Impact 912E-

914=

Don't knock them - they have lovely handling and are a great fun, cheap to enter way to air cooled Porsche ownership

I'm sorry, but you may be missing the point here - a dodgy 912 costs exactly the same amount to sort as a dodgy 911 - the tub and panels are the same after all. So why buy an underpowered 912 when you can buy the real thing, with a Porsche engine, and for the same money if you do your research?

I should qualify this by saying that I did see a very clean 912 for £3k recently and for that money, for access to the classic Porsche shape and some of the experience, it would have been a good buy - had it not been baby puke green.

All IMHO of course and I'd qualify all of this by sugggesting that you drive examples of 912s and 911s of the same era before making any decision on purchase - and I bet you don't end up buying the 912 ;-)

Ok, well maybe I'm just talking shit then. But it was the 912E in that pic above that I saw, except it was silver, and in perfect condition, gorgeous car. I've not seen a 911 shaped like that, in the flesh, before.

Too quick on the flame I think. In my view (and more particularly that of many car designers who are more likely to know what they are talking about) the 1960s 911/912, before it began to sprout wings and blisters, is the one of the most beautiful cars of any manufacturer. After all nothing spoils the line of a well cut suit more than stuffing things in the pockets.

Mr Kryton is young and may not previously have seen the 911 shape as its designers intended it, he has fine taste.
Guy.

I agree, 912 / early 911 is the most beautiful, but price to performance ratio makes for some tough decisions. I am looking at 911 ownership, would love an early car for the looks, but coming from an Elise I feel its performance would turn me off.

A early 911 can be twice as expensive as a 912 but the engine is the soul of the car and a big reason for buying IMHO

Nothing wrong with the 2.0l flat four though really... I had the 914 with that in it... 110% reliable

Thanks Guy, and you can call me Rick! And I am young, well guessed.

So how much would either of these incredible cars set someone back then? I take it the 911 would be a hell-of-a-lot more than the '12? Would the running costs be really high?

You're obviously well acquainted with Emm then Paul!

Fingers crossed the Box will be finished in time for Brunters.
