Had yesterday the chance to try a 911 from 1988. I was realy happy with the engine (although 6000 rpm is quite short) but was disappointed with the gearbox. Seems slow with long lever. Pedalcourse is long. Very nice look, that is why I like that model.
Am I too exigent?
MAIN QUESTION: When (which model year?) Porsche did improve the gearbox? (As I suppose they did anyway)

Thanks for your input.

I think it was 1988 model year on - with the G50 gearbox, so you may have tried the last of the old type.

The 'big improvement' was 1987 from the 915 gearbox to the G50 with hydraulic clutch. As far as I understand it the box on the later cars - the 964s from 1989 was simply an evolution from this one.

The gear lever on 964s is shorter however which may help with the throw. Mine was smooth except occasionally the change from 1-2

They can feel a little agricultural at first - best drive a few more

James is correct on his dates...I actually like the G50 set up in the carrera...there is a slightly shorter gear lever fitted to the clubsport models, but this is still abit of a "magic wand" compared to the shorter throw 964 set up.

I believe James's 1987 date needs to be taken with caution, as this was the LHD changeover date. The RHD models got the G50 gearbox (compared to the ponderous 915) later on, and a 1988 UK car could still have a 915 box.

The G50 continued in many variants, including the 6 speed version fitted to the 993, until it was superseded by the cable change Getrag for the 996.

As CS says, the G50 variants in certain models had an even shorter throw than standard. The 964RS G50/10 has a short shift as standard, as well as LSD and some stronger internal parts.

I would be suprised Dom,,,i have driven an original D pate carrera rhd 3.2 which is 1986/87 that definitely had a G50.....either way the g50 is superior to the 915..
chances are as our friend bher is posting from belgium he may well be looking at a lhd car.

You may be right, CS. I will see what I can dig out. I am only going what I can vaguely remember Ray at Northway telling me about 7 years ago

G50s are definitely better boxes - I never got on with the 915 :crunch:

Thanks for the answers.
I am from Belgium and think about a LHD.
I should probably drive the car more to get more use to it but my feeling was really bad I almost change my target from 88 carrera to 993(even if the shape is less classic on my mind)if the GB is better of course.

I do not understand the "derestrictor crown" question. Sorry for my english.

I organise next sunday trip around Brussels with a roarbook of 100 miles and mixed cars (mainly Porsche and Lotus). Hope to try and ask about other models

The G50 changeover was 1986 - definitely not as late as 1988.

Now that sounds like fun !!

According to the venerable Red Book (so almost Gospel quality) the G50 was introduced in the H program August '86 to July '87, as the type 950/00 and /01. Sourced from Getrag, and renamed G50/00 (/01) in the J program. PET seems to agree.

993 six speed with RS shifter is pretty nice, even with the later ratios .....

HTH, cheers, Maurice
