Just picked up an 05 Boxster S 987 - lovely thing but has a bit of a whine that seems to be more from the passenger side - doesn't seem to vary directly with speed but not there on idle - any ideas? Just had a major £800 service - bit of a pity.

also, not related - best value warranty to get? Just had a good experience with wife's car on Autoprotect so may stick with them

Thanks

Scott

Does it whine with the AC off?

I had similar symptoms caused by a leak in the air con system.

If you find it's not the AC compressor by comparing noise with it on and off, then the second candidate in my experience would be the water pump.

Thanks guys.

I had the aircon on ECO which I think is OFF so it's not that. I googled it and there seems to be a load of noises and causes! I had a 996 targa but no noises with that.

I may drop it into a Specialist for a look.

Thanks

S

The thing to do is to remove the belt and check if the noise disappears. If it does then you know it's one of the anciliaries so if it's not the AC, you're down to the alternator, the water pump or the idle pulley. My money is still on the water pump. biggrin

Hy:
I had the same problem on my 2006 2.7 987.1 Boxster. I replace the Belt tensioner Pulley and the 2 idle pulleys but the problem remains. Found out later that the squeeky noise came from the alternator freewheel Pulley. after replace it the noise problem went away. The freewheel pulley cost $ 52.00 dollars and it takes around 30 minutes to replace it. Also you need an special porsche Pulley Socket tool to remove it. I got myne from Koshtools.com for $16.00 dollars plus shipping.

Hope this help....
