Mobil 1 fully synthetic 5w/40 may be better for an older model
rather than 0w/40 that might find the weak spots and leak
Not quite rightrather than 0w/40 that might find the weak spots and leak
The first number with the w is the winter viscosity (or thickness of the oil) the lower the number the thinner the oil when cold and the quicker it will get round your engine, better for cold starts.
The second number is the running temperature viscosity (normally taken to be 100 deg C). The higher the number the thicker the oil at temperature, which will be a lot thinner than when it’s cold.
So both these grades quoted are effectively the same with regard to an old engine, the 0w/40 is marginally better, but for normal driving conditions in the UK it not really an issue and either would be fine.
If you want the best for your car I personally (as in my handbook) would recommend Mobil 1 0w/40, it’s widely available Halfords stock it, but it’s a bit pricy. For other brands stay with fully synthetic and similar grades.
Cheers,
Simon.
I would strongly recommend 5w40 as 0w40 is really thin. There are many approved 5w40 oils. I use Mobil Super 3000 X1 5W-40 but there are others.
LN Engineering also think that it's a better choice than 0w40. http://www.lnengineering.com/ims.html

As it's only an old Boxster, you could use any oil that has previously drained from a 911.
Could be very cost effective!

You surely wanted to make a joke but with lots of people changing good synthetic oil way too early this actually may be a solution Could be very cost effective!

I consider this to to be a very green solution to disposing of old engine oil
