996 turbo engine life BANG!!!!

Just how good are these engines??

70k on the clock, will it go bang soon??

Fsh, warmed up every time etc etc.

Currently perfect.

good for 350,000 miles. Theres one around on original engine with this mileage and its still being used daily. 70k miles and its just run in!

Hi my 996tt has 73000 still goes and looks perfect problem is maintenance costs like Tyres,radiators,heat shields ,top mounts, I think these cars need to be driven regularly to keep them running sweet sometimes low mileage cars can have problems,had my turbo for 6 1/2 years now and still love it.

90k on mine now daily driver replaced virtually all consumables over last 2 years still going strong no intention of moving on....... roll on 100 k!

+1 on the old bit. Some go bang due to timing chain breaking but it is rare. Much rarer than vanilla 996/997 engines.
Like all turbo cars, some usage rules apply: warm up, cool down.

Modern engine - even the old 3.0/3.3 found on 930 go forever! Actually they are probably the ones 100% reliable

Yeah when i said modern i meant non Air Cooled. But as we know the GT & Turbo cars have the GT1 bottom end, which like any engine if looked after will last forever.

IIRC the things to watch - and change if you are unsure of any over-rev are:

1. Timing chain
2. Water pump

I believe the are a few timing chains which have now had links inserted to make changing easier (rather than replacing the whole unit).

Anyone here gone down this route?

On the point of timing chains I tried to get a warranty from warranty direct,the man came round looked at the car a said my timing chain was a bit noisy so I listened to 8 other 996 tt all sounded the same just like a 911!!! They wanted a letter from Porsche to say it was ok so I didn't bother I was also wondering what it would cost to change the chain anybody?

I think it is a full strip down to do the timing chain, so if you were going to dismantle the engine that far you'd might as well do a full rebuild which is when the cost mounts.

Someone like to confirm?

Bascially yes. So then you may as well upgrade the oil pump, new lifters, upgraded rods, etc

Here is a photo from recent build - you can see the chains so you are right down to the bottom of the crank case.
