997 GT3 RS Gen 1 or 2
Discussion
I am interested in picking one up over the next few months and I have been looking into colours and spec etc. Id appreciate some feedback on what extras/options to have and also which ones to avoid etc.
Basically, whats does a good one have and vice versa. Maybe even some of you would say the normal GT3 is fine enough???
Ta.

I would prefer a Gen 1 RS, prefer the looks and colour combo's, not one colour combo i like on the Gen 2. Having said that, why not pick up a 2007 GT3 for around 55k.

most 997 Gen 1 RS's start at 75k. Unless you are doing a lot of circuit days then i personally would save myself around 15k and just buy a Gen 1 GT3 Clubsport.
The Gen 2 GT3's start at around 80k and for the RS version it is just shy of 100k.

997 RS.1 fantastic car. We did several thousand miles touring Europe (roll cage unbolted and removed) and several track days. Great fun.
997 RS.2 Better handling and more power (can you ever have to much bhp?) with later touch screen sat nav etc. If you can afford one the second generation car is a better car. If you start off with a gen 1 can you will not be disappointed (just don't drive a gen 2 car).

All good.
I want the best car with the best chance of holding its value. Say what you want but that is a real issue for me even if I have to compromise in some ways.
Sounds like a Gen2 is the one to go for.
I did look at the GT3 but Im maybe way off here but id rather a Turbo S. I dont see a market for a GT3 as long as a TurboS or the Gt3 RS exists. Hence the reason there are so may available and they are cheaper maybe.
I was looking at the Porsche website the other day and its amazing the number of variants there is on one model.

you need to look up your models, a 997 GT3 and turbo in the same line, the turbo market has nothing to do with the GT3 market. !!!!
as for a 997.1 RS over a 997.1 GT3 you get nothing extra for your 15k bar a big wing, the 997.1 RS was a bit of a marketing thing with pretty colours.
people saying if you do tracks days get the RS is a bit daft when you are looking at the 997.1 models.
Then gen 2 models are 35k more. and a 997 Turbo S is 130k ?

All good cars, but the Gen 2's have a lot further to fall than the Gen 1's. And some people think the 6RS will lose the least money.I want the best car with the best chance of holding its value. Say what you want but that is a real issue for me even if I have to compromise in some ways.

Well, if that is your key driver, then I would suggest a 996 RS is better than 997.1RS which is better than 997.2RS.The 7.2RS is the newest car and hence most likely to still be on a depreciating curve (though still a better buy than other non GT variants).
The 7.1RS and 6RS are both more stable in comparison. To be honest, even if these were depreciating at the same % rate as the 7.2RS, the absolute sums involved are lower and hence the absolute size of money at risk.
If I was buying now I would mentally budget that with a 7.2RS you would have at most ~£10K at risk, with a 7.1RS ~£7K, and with a 6RS ~£5K
(by these numbers I mean how much you could lose over a short/medium term buy and sell cycle even if the car did not inherently depreciate much...which compared to all other alternative cars is still very good!)
You could also interpret that as if you can afford £100K then a 7.2RS is not all that more expensive! (I know I probably just contradicted myself!)
All IMHO

Ah snap! and more pithy. You beat me to it.
Now the 996 GT3 is something I had not considered and a huge chunk cheaper and solid in terms of potential resale value. Thanks to the mention of that one!I own a 360CS and a E46 M3 CSL so the 996 GT3 would complete the set of 2003-4 cars to have. However, I just thought that i would have a look into seeing what the up to date versions are and hence the reason I thought it might be the GT3 RS.
Is a 997.1 GT3 RS just a 997.1 GT3 with some cosmetic bits? I am surpised at that one. Surely not.

AFAIK - wider body, fatter tyres, roll cage, fire extinguisher, cup seats, 6 point belts, huge spoiler, painted wheels, livery, suspension changes but no doubt someone will add a few more differences.Power probably the same, although not so on the Gen 2.
