Go over to www.tipec.net & do a search & you'll find an exhaustive list. But when you spin the key does the revcounter bounce off the stop & have you changed the DME relay?Does it have a spark?
Take plug out.
Put on end of HT lead.
Press edge of plug against something grounded (bare metal on engine block?)
Have a mate turn the car over. (With big strong arms!)
OK, turn the engine over instead.
If you see a strong blue spark, then it's not electrical.
Next thing to check is whether it's getting fuel.
Change the fuel filter.
Try again.
Try taking a plug out once you've tried starting it a bit. Are the plugs wet? If so, fuel is getting there.
Does the plug look very black and sooty? if so, the mixture is too rich (too much fuel, not enough air)
Change air filter and clean up the spark plugs with a bit of emery cloth.
Is the fuel OK (I've got a boat with 200 litres of Christ-knows-what in the tank)
There's a few basics to get you on your way. Not specific to 944s but useful to know.
Welcome to PH, and watch out for the grammar Nazis.

Nope standard 944 testing is as above, if the rev counter doesn't bounce there will be neither spark or fuel, if the DME relay is dead then there will be one but not the other!Take plug out.

One of the most common causes of this in Porsches of a certain age (late 80's - mid 90's) is a failure of the DME relay, which results in the fuel pumps / Injection system not squirting fuel into the motor . . . . .google DME failure and you'll find plenty of guides on how to check if this is causing your problem

Mike, have a look at this
http://www.dietersmotorsports.com/tech/2001/DME_re...
If the car is pre 1985, it's relay number two in this picture of the fusebox

It will be in the relay/fuse crate under the bonnet. It will be marked DME on the key on the lid. Reseat all the relays whilst there & pull the relevant fuses & check they are OK & not corroded. Edited to say A. stick to one thread
& B. it is a specific relay for around £20 or so. You should keep a spare, they do die.....Edited by tr7v8 on Thursday 3rd November 20:42
