I'm looking to buy a 993 for around £34,000. Will be my first Porsche. Wondering if anyone can help me

a) Been offered a 96 993 Convertible at this price, with 25k on the clock, full main dealer history, but "a few stone chips". I assume they could be fixed privately later - thi sseems like a fantastic bargain

b) would i bet better with a coupe, or getting a Boxster?

Any help appreciated

Personally I think the coupe looks a million times better than the cab 993. The clean swooping roofline is an essential part of the 911 if you ask me. Plus it'll drive better.

Yes, I agree.

For driving experience, resale and looks, the coupe is the better choice.

Make sure you buy a 1996 model year 993 or later, these are more sorted.

I would suggest a C2 manual coupe in RHD for that money, in a dark colour or a good metallic, with a dark coloured leather interior. This will hold its value well, and be refined but fast transport.

If you want something more raw or characterful, I would suggest getting a cheap 993 Turbo 4 in LHD for 36k or spend 40k on a 993 RS. If this is outside your budget, a 964RS for 25k upwards will be a good choice for a keen driver.

Should you want something a bit more 'normal', the Boxster S in RHD is a good car and comes within your budget.

Thanks for the replies. The same garage has a nice Coupe on at £35k, but with 49k on the clock. Its a big difference in mileage, for the same price. I'm wondering if they will move on the price of the coupe - my insurance quotes are about £500 more for the coupe rather than the cab, which surprised me, especially in London. What sort of price should I be looking at for a coupe with almost 50k on the clock?

Buy a Turbo 2, much more fun (Charles Ivey have one)....

I found the 993 a little too good and the power delivery was too smooth.

I bought a LHD 993 RS from Germany with 40,000 miles on the clock. It's my second 911, and absolutely love it. Put it another way - I will never sell it!

randeria,
Could you tell us a little about your experiences with your 993RS please, how you found it, price, cost of ownership etc. Would be interested to know.

londondscot, you are looking at low-mid 30s for a nice 50k RHD 993 Carrera Coupe. Try Autofarm, as they often have some nice examples in. If you don't mind LHD, they have a nice C4S in (immaculate, low miles) for 32k. I would trust buying from them.

I wouldn't underestimate the refinement of a 993 possibly taking something away from the driving experience. People say they are hard to love until you live with them for ages, and I though this was bollocks until I drove one. Whilst I didn't follow UV down the 3.6/3.3 Turbo 2 route (I did drive a 3.6 to see what they were like) I agree that some of the earlier 964 shape cars can be more fun. This is why the 993RS and even Turbo 4 have their fans - they're 993s with a bit of TVR excitement and character thrown in.

For a practical, posey car, a C4S would fit the bill tremendously. Autofarm are just off the M40 J9 and well worth a visit. Speak to Karen, their sales lady (who managed to persuade me not to buy a 993 for the reasons above, but get a 964RS instead!).

Or I could go for a f*** off yellow one, with a massive spoiler!!

Cheers, I'm thinking I'll stick with silver or dark

Ha ha, yeah, I thought you'd notice that - I never buy cars for resale myself (I like the yellow ones with big spoilers) but I always try and give an informed, independent perspective for the first post!!!!

- If you fancy a fun 993, buy a sporty one or one you'll love, in yellow with big wheels

- If you fancy a sensible 993, buy an RHD C2 manual coupe in a dark metallic (or silver) as you suggest, preferably from a main dealer

I was in exactly the same position as you last month and was trawling the dealers when I posted a similar question to yours on the Titanic Porsche forum. I was contacted by a chap who was selling his 993 due to the imminent arrival of a new 996. I now own a very nice dark metallic blue '96 993 Coupe which I paid less than £31k for and that included a £1k service and MOT the day before I took delivery!

I had convinced myself that I would only buy from a dealer but having looked at lots of cars it was the only one that said 'buy me' that I could afford! Needless to say I had it inspected by the local OPC before committing myself. So don't rule out private sales even though they are less convenient. I'd go for a coupe if I were you though as they look better and should be cheaper to insure.

Just look at those prices.......... If only I'd got 100K to spend 13 years ago.
