my 996 c2's temperature warning light keeps flashing sometimes, usually after a bit of enthusiastic driving or passing something on the motorway the light flashes, the temperature never changes from around 80-90 and when i turn off the ignition the light stays off for a bit, the water level is fine and its not overheating, any ideas?
thanks

Mine was doing the same last week, but I found it was just below the min level. Topped it up and it's gone down again :-( Took it to Northway and have been told I need a new header tank, which is evidently quite common.

Is the water near the min level? If so, I guess a bit of enthusiastic driving may just be tripping the sensor. Try topping it up a bit and see if it goes down at all.

If is not the level then It's probably a faulty / intermitant sensor. Could also be a wire loose or chaffed. Then again it could be something completely different.

I thought this was just an air lock or something similar that affects early 996's. Mine certainly does if I get near the red line. Temperature gauge never moves but the light flashes. I was told on this forum that it's nothing to worry about and can report mine is fine 6 months after I initially saw the problem. Car has been serviced and checked out by Northway since and no problems found.

Hope that helps

I had a '98 3.4 c2, this did it all the time when I cained it. The OPC said it was a known issue.

It's nothing to do with the water at all. The red light is used (when flashing) when the oil reservoir gets drained quickly - i.e. when you boot it hard the oil pressure builds up from a very low pressure and drains the reservoir very quickly. This isn't a problem just that the red light flashes until you turn the engine off. The reservoir does refill but at a slightly slower rate under a hard acceleration.

I hope this helps.

Verify this with a good OPC.
