I'm seriously thinking of selling my 2010 Boxster S and getting an air coooled 911.

I would probably go for a convertible as it suits my intended use, although I know the coupe is the purists choice.

This one looks very nice - if a bit pricey, is it worth looking at ?

I don't think I could spend 25k on it.

don;t like that era of cars.

need to be pre impact bumpers for me or then move to the 964.
all that 80's stuff look a bit naff to me.

Go for it ... a stunning example of a classic looking 911, yes it is a tad pricey but look at the cars condition. Cars like this don't become available very often ... you need to drive it 1st though as they are far from a modern drive ... very heavy steering at town speeds ....on the open road however they come alive.

Totally different drive to the Boxster, that's for sure! Looking at your profile it seems you are well used to older cars, but I wouldn't go into this without a proper test drive. They are a bit of an acquired taste and the convertibles are a bit wibbly wobbly on the chassis. But could be lots of fun if you take to the old school 911 character.

I'm biased as a 3.2 owner, but i'd say definitely have a drive of it, or another 3.2, to feel the vastly different driving experience, and then choose what makes you feel happy

As a previous poster noted, the steering is comparatively heavy, and you'll also speculate as to the species of ape who designed the heating and ventilation system, will laugh at the windscreen wipers in action, and you probably wouldn't want to leave it out in all weathers either......but.......the sound of an air cooled 3.2 at full chat with the hood down will compensate these small matters a 1,000 times over. Still very nimble, and though modern Porsches will be faster on paper, in the real world you might enjoy the feeling of speed in this even more (IMHO)

If it's a long term keeper, you could have a very nice appreciating classic there, subject to having a full PPI done

I don't know enough to comment on the sale price, but genuine unmolested 3.2's are less and less common these days

I had a 1988 Supersport Targa a few years back, and although it was a beauty, after a while I found it a bit under powered and the steering became tiresome when in town & for parking.

For that money, I would look for a nice 964 or 993 cab, IMHO of course.

Good Luck.

+1 on the later stuff...25k is a lot of 964

I think you need to drive them. The old stuff will be very diff to the boxster.

The 993 is the other option I am considering.

I don't intend to use the car as a daiy driver so I can put up with some quirks and I'm used to driving classic cars so lack of power steering isn't a problem.

The 3.2 Carrera appeals because of it's simplicity for one thing. The 964 seems to be a much more complicated beast.

Are the cabriolets so much less stiff bodily than the coupes?

The performance looks decent on paper - are they really that much slower than later cars ?

Have a read of this thread, I waffle on a bit but there's a huge difference between the old & the new:

I've owned 964, 993 and 3.2 - all standard NA and rear wheel drive. I don't recall there being much difference in straight line speed between the 3.2 and the 964. 993 feels slightly quicker as seems to have more low down oomph but difference is probably marginal.

3.2 was fun but feels much older. Great fo Sunday morning blasts but often found myself taking the BMW as 3.2 was just too agricultural. 964 was fine but I felt it needed to be thrashed to get it moving. Much prefer the 993. Just feels better overall and very solid.

I understand the appeal of the cabriolet but think cutting the roof off spoils the shape of the 911. Think on a 3.2 it would be a bit wobbly but would be interested to hear what people say that have owned both.

I have driven a 3.2 targa once, now own the 986 Boxster, my imporessions were:
  • It didn't feel wobbly
  • The engine needed proper revs for the car to shift. But it also felt keener than the 986 one (can't comment on the 987).
  • Steering felt great, feeelsome and light while on the go
  • The balance was definitely rear biased. Interesting.

I owned a lovely 3.2 Supersport Cab, owned it twice.
Yeah old fashioned, yeah not very quick........

Sounded lovely though (after market pipe) looked great with the hood down IMO and most importantly made me smile when i drove it.
Thats what is all about IMO.

Well the Boxster S is definately going in the new year. I've looked at the used prices and they seem to be in freefall.

As a second car I can't justify the loss.

Not sure if I'll replace it with a 3.2 carrera or a 993.

I think that even just a passenger ride in both would make your mind up.

Have you considered a Targa?

Now that's nice, I really miss the aircooled cars when I look at those pictures. Not really into cabs but I could easily be persuaged into that. Not made from concentrate, 100% pure Porsche.

Are you talking 993 Targa ?

Yes I have considered one but are they preferable to a 993 convertible ? I haven't driven either and they are a bit thin on the ground.

JZM have a nice example of each but they're not exactly local to me.

The 3.2 Targas are not for me.

Know what you mean, i think i actually preferred this to my 930 5 Speed turbo. I don't have a problem with Cabs but they are harder to sell on......

Just out of interest, are you really 100% after a cab? In my humble the coupe is just so much better & with a sunroof you still get that lovely open top feeling due to the snug confines of the old 911 shell, have a read.....

Definately worth looking at. Looks a lovely example. Go drive it, fall in love with it, have it thoroughly inspected and get it bought. No worries about scuttle shake. The 3.2 cabs and targa's have the additional stiffening to the cill sections in the front footwell areas as the later 964's and 993's had.
