996 C2... What a great car!
Discussion
After a few months of ownership I like it even more now that the day I bought it...
It hasn't blown up, it hasn't developed any problems, it was well serviced when I bought it,
(done 80k miles now) and is as fast as I will ever need!
I know a very small percentage go wrong (but that's true with most things in life) but the fact is that many of the threads on this forum has driven down the price of these great cars to enable me to go buy one... (the values have taken a proper battering this year!)
I need to invest in a couple of new rear tyres soon, but other than that, its not cost me a single
penny in un-scheduled costs. Not used a drop of oil, and only real cost has been fuel...
Even insurance has only cost just over £330 fully comp.
The point of this post...?
Just to say that you can own a fantastic 911 without it costing the earth! (so far)

I completely agree. I've had my 996 C2 for 3 years now and I can't think of another car that that would sound as good (PSE fitted!), be as fast, as good to look at, and as practical (summer holidays in France with 2 kids). Only a 996tt may tempt me but frankly another 100bhp is academic and the luggage space is smaller too!
Yes, they can go wrong, but in 20k miles, (from 60k-80k), I have only had consumables, an alternator and an RMS (I guess the latter are pretty much consumables on the 996!) to worry about. I know a clutch won't be too far away, and some front suspension bits are starting to wear but this is supercar motoring after all.
Enjoy it like many others of us out there!

I also got a good price of £371 fully comp for me and the Mrs on my 3.6 2002 facelift C2 cab in black with black leather complete with hardtop full history no issues, new clutch and p zeros allround for 13k asking price was 17.5k so a good buy for me I hope, like us all I am aware they can go wrong but never worry about it!!
Got to agree with you, the numerous threads regarding engine reliability has enabled me to put a mint 2001 996 with full service OPC history in my garage for less than the price of a new fiesta.
Love the car, great engineering, as much power as i need and cheaper to run than my wifes Discovery.

To be fair the limited life of the engine is I think less of a factor than the cost of insurance, tyres, fuel, parts, tax, servicing etc.Love the car, great engineering, as much power as i need and cheaper to run than my wifes Discovery.
The older 996s have hit a grey area of poor enthusiasts who have mortgages and tax to pay, and Porsche made an awful lot of them!
Additionally the market is AWASH with superb performance cars for peanuts, for that reason alone it's interesting to see 996 prices holding up so well in the face of stiff competition.

I almost bought some 18" wheels, but in the end I stayed with the 17's, as I think they suit the car better, and all the "people in the know" say 17" is about optimum for great handling / ride quality...
