Is it me, or do they seem to be dropping very rapidly at the moment? I have been keeping a close eye on the market for about a year now, and have to say I am shocked at how many are well below 30k compared to last year! How far can we realistically expect them to drop? There are a few high milers under 20k now which is amazing value really, I just wish I was in a position to buy now, but may well have to wait until the summer due to a career change frown..

I don't wish to talk the market down to any 996 owners, I am simply amazed at what a car you can get for the money now, from a buyers P.O.V it is very exciting! I will keep dreaming about owning a manual x50 in Basalt yum

And thats very much the sad thing, there will be more unloved or big bills out there for those buying on the cheap, these little firecrackers do need some care. They are still £100k cars with bills to match when stuff goes wrong, which will mean more of the cheaper ones will be having a haircut on care so buyer beware.

I'm 10 months into mine and it's wanted for nothing in terms of care, my wallet is lighter but I'm still grinning

As always - thorough check on condition, PPI it, go out and enjoy

+1 second that (yet not having experienced the 996TT and no intend too) but in general any of these cars will retain their servicing and maintenance costs as when they were new - or even increase (at least something does increase ahahahah)

They need to be in tip top shap to get the full experience wink

So how much would one need to pay to get one that doesn't need lots of money spent on it? £28k+?

Personally I think that high running costs aren't a huge issue if they are coupled with low entry costs smile. Its easier for me to find £5k a year for maintennance with a £25k entry price than it is to find £5k pa on a £40k entry price.

but the question is would you be spending £5k/yr on the £40k car?

Probably not, but still possible, but for me its still easier to find £25k and £5k pa than to find £40k in a lump sum. Plus I will possibly lose less in depreciation smile

Trouble is alot of people buying at the lower end at stretching and 5k can be alot, plus the amount that needs to be spent on a lower value car can often be considerably more.

It's often better to go for a low value car with high miles if you can see that works been done to keep when required (backed up by invoices).

Agreed. In my case its a cashflow thing, my Tuscan costs circa £3k pa and the Audi another £1500 so selling both and going for a 996tt is a viable proposaition. I am reluctant to draw £40k out of my savings to spend on a car that will inevitable depreciate potentiall by £15-20k during a few years ownership. A £25k car may only los £5-10k so makes better sense even factoring in an addition couple of £k pa to maintain it.

No, but a 40k car will still require money spent on it.

Tis very muddy waters here.........ticket price does not equal condition.
No 996 turbo is factory fresh so even a 54 plate car at 35K has the ability to cripple with an unexpected bill - or a rapid series of smaller ones.
Equally there will be cars at 22K (Richard Hamilton's?) that may be a bit leggy but have had everything done recently and thus have a good chance of not generating high bills.

By this logic we should all buy cheap and spend the 10K in the first year to make the car sound and then future bills will be partially mitigated. This however only works for a keeper so there will continue to be cheap cars run on the cheap with missed services etc.

So is a cheap car good or bad - is a more expensive car better.
No real rules here - best to treat each one as an individual - kiss a lot of frogs - know what a dog smells like - or spend a great deal on PPI - if you find a cheap good one biggrin, if you find a dog know what it would cost to make it mint or walk away.

I think as these cars get older the difference in buying a car that needs work and one that is sorted will grow ever wider in terms of the money you will need to spend so be careful as I do not think this will be reflected in ticket prices.

Busy times ahead for the PPI guys......................must write that buyers guide sometime!!

Depends on how quickly the seller wants to sell - and how much depreciation he is willing to write off!

Heres some context on TCO for a 2001 996T bought in September 2009 at 60K miles, used as a daily driver and now has nearly 90K on the clock.

Purchase Delta (after trade In) £14,400
Road Duty £645 - to Sep 2012
Insurance £3,650 - to Oct 2012
Maint Plan £3,594 - to Dec 2012
Servicing, Parts, Tyres & Labour £10,669
Modifications £4,447
Fuel £5,839

So after 29,052 Miles and 27 Months of ownership thats £43,274K spent including purchase delta.

Thats £1.49 for every happy mile....

Its impossible to say how much one will cost in terms of running, regardless of what the purchase price is, you might buy a low miler that needs a ton of cash spending on it over a period or a high miler like mine that needs nothing.

The rest I can cope with but with the Maintenance plan, how did you managed to rack up that £10k bill in only 30,000 miles? How much of that was new tyres, for example?

I'm probably just naive to the maintenance costs of these.

I purchased mine 3 years ago. Radiators, gearbox, clutch, shields, many discs and pads, tyres, plus services. Nearly all done under warranty by Porsche. 15,000 miles for about £10,000. At least I know it's up together now for another 50,000 miles.

Maybe I need to re-think this 996 turbo itch or just make room for both cars and a divorce smile

It needed a lot of work initially before it went on to the plan (I'm a bit meticulous so had everything done that was required and more) so the usual i.e, rads, condensers, heat shields, top mounts, a turbo charger , actuators, major service etc etc, not much change out of £6K.

Tyres around £1.8K's worth over the period.

Its easy to rack up a bill on these cars!
