Ok, bear with me on this. Sit back and just give it a minute before flaming me down a peg or two.

In September the wife and I went down on the Sunday to the PCGB show at Cirencester. Whilst looking around the various 911s my better half pointed out she quite liked a particular car, I turned around and saw she was pointing at an early 996.

Well, me being a diehard aircooled (or should that be oilcooled) fsn immediatly put her right that the first watercooled 911 was the ugly duckling of the 911 world, and gently moved her on to the later 996 with the revised lights. I also told her that the 997 (out of my price range) was an even prettier car. Alas I imformed her that if it was going to be water cooled, budget dictated a later 996.

Nope she was having none of it, far prefered the earlier to the later 996. ..... We moved on.

Anyway over the next few weeks it got me thinking and i started to quietly have a look at the earlier 996s on here. ......... I'm now quite starting to like them, even the fact that they are narrow bodied in comparison to the previous 993 and the later 997.

Am I going mad, or am I not the only person to think the early 996 is starting to mature quite well? ...... Shock horror, I even like it if fitted with the factory fit GT3 Kit, especially the skirts. (As long as it doesn't pretend to be a GT3). ...... Now that is something I would never believe I would say only a couple of years ago.

I'm ok with both Amber's and clears. Amber's do give it a retro look which is cool IMHO.

The reason Porsche fitted the fully recessed headlights was because they were much more aerodynamic than the round slightly sticky out ones.

It was only because of the outcry from the "old school" that they returned to the old fashioned round headlightsyuck. It should also be noted that almost every other manufacturer uses body contoured lights because they have the technology to make them that way.

By my reckoning the early 996 lights win on three counts:- Modern, aerodynamic and technological tongue outtongue outtongue out

I also think Nigella Lawson is eye candy yes
