997 S gone for warranty work :-( but have a Panamera!
Discussion
As the title says, read the post by the 996 turbo guy who wrote up a long list of everything that wasn't perfect and got JZM to fix it all...
So, I did the same with my 2 month old purchase - 997 S. Wrote up a list including gearbox being difficult to select 1st when not stationary and crunching into 2nd when cold. Knocking noise at the front, some rattles and a rubber window seal lifting up when the window wound up. That actually sounds quite bad when I read that back but the car looks spotless.
They’ve had the car since Monday and I’m now told the entire gearbox and front suspension will be placed under warranty. Thank god I have that cover! I’ve only done 300 miles in 2 months, the car is 2005 and covered 35k miles. I think I’ll be without the car until Jan but I wouldn’t drive it in this weather anyway.
Courtesy car was next on the list. VW Passat or a Panamera? Hmmm. Three days with the Panamera and I really like it but wouldn’t sell the 911, I’d have both though. Very comfy, loads of gadgets, reasonably fast but rubbish in town and it takes up more space than a BMW X5 parked next to me. I do see the point in them now though and if I had the funds for an everyday car at this price, it would be on the list. Just doesn’t feed my sports car hunger. I’d like my 911 back and fixed soon!

Have my 911 back! So much better than driving the Panamera bus around, feels like I'm back in a kart!
Front suspension changed and can feel it so thats good and less rattles but the gearbox has apparently been replaced and I still can't get it into 1st if coasting up to a junction or going from 2nd to 1st in any other way than stationary and even then I have to - clutch/neutral/clutch first...
Is this just what they do?

I could probably count on one hand the number of times I've shifted to 1st while still moving. Usually stop at lights in 2nd (sometimes 3rd), clutch, then 1st gear. Maybe that's not the right way, but that's how I was taught.
Very occasionally I struggle find 1st, but usually only when cold. This is a Cayman btw, but probably quite similar?

I never ever select first unless the car - or any car - is stationary, maybe it is an old method that was required moons ago that has just stuck with me though ?Front suspension changed and can feel it so thats good and less rattles but the gearbox has apparently been replaced and I still can't get it into 1st if coasting up to a junction or going from 2nd to 1st in any other way than stationary and even then I have to - clutch/neutral/clutch first...

Maybe it was before cars had synchromesh in 1st ?? not sure if they do now though ?

Isn't that the syncro gear stopping you selecting first? Its a design feature of most modern gear box's.
Try the doing the same but "heal and toe", and with matched revs you may find it slots into first fine.
EDIT- you are also doing this by selecting neutral first, clutch up, and back in again. Double de-clutching.

How can I find out what the number would have been originally? Email to PGB in Reading?
Sounds like the Silverstone driver training will be good for me then if that's how everyone else drives
I'm talking about literally snail pace moving as in nearly stopping at a mini-roundabout and not being able to select 1st so have to give it more revs in 2nd. My E46 M3 or 968 didn't do this.

Can I check what is wrong with your suspension? My Boxster has some play in the front left suspension strut. Porsche have refused to cover this under warranty as they say it is 'wear and tear' with owning and driving the vehicle. It has been put in for a good will claim, but this won't cover the full value if it does get accepted. Not happy about this.

IIRC it's on the sticker under the bonnet, a copy of which should also be in the service Sounds like the Silverstone driver training will be good for me then if that's how everyone else drives

Thanks will check and suspension related - a knocking noise when going over any bumps but no vibrations or anything out of the ordinary at speed fed back through the steering wheel.
Steering felt great coming from an E46 M3 and then going back to it after the Panamera. Can't really say more than that but they did replace the front suspension fully apparently. My car was less than 2 months old from being purchased at Guildford Porsche and I'd only driven a few hundred miles so wouldn't expect anything less.
