I'm looking at changing my s2000 for a 996 sometime in the next 6 - 18 months so I did a bit of research.

insurance £250 more a year ( 1999 s2k worth £4k topps to a 2000 c4s £12 -15k )

parts and servicing seem about 10 -20 % more although some things apear to be cheaper.

what question havent I asked whats the achillies heel I'm missing ?

They have rare but catastrophic engine failures. Well documented on here. I did say RARE.

Linky here.

New engine is ten grand or a rebuild about six.

I had one for five years, had to run it with the Porsche warranty at 1200 notes a year. Don't even think about one unless you're covered either by that or by a plan like the Hartech one.

Cracking cars though.

Might be a small but significant point.........there is no such thing as a 2000 C4S.......more research required!

You do indeed need to be prepared for the worst should it happen, and you can either take the advice above or keep a crisis fund just in case the unexpected happens.

Oh, and you've overlooked the fact that a good set of tyres will set you back at least £1k and the rears don't last long.

Great cars, I nearly got one before I bought the Turbo, some times wish I did LOL.
The earlest C4s will be on a 2002 MY
Find a good Independent for service would be my advice, best example I can give is: Alternator, OPC £1080 plus labour, from Indi £280 plus labour and inc. warrenty. Same Bosch alternator part number matched spot on.

I switched my S2000 for a 996T in Feb last year. My insurance went up by only £50/year. This year it is set to go down by another £100.

Haven't really had much to spend money on as it hasn't had it's service yet but it does much through tyres quicker than the S and they are a lot more expensive! (going from a small 16" to very big 18"). Petrol has been quite a bit more too as my daily driver.

It is much easier to drive than the S was though. Much more comfortable too.

I would definitely recommend it!

Not strictly true - just different less expensive worries. Do a search on 964 studs, oil leaks, top-end rebuilds, flywheels etc for starters.

They're totally different beasts. All have their own pet issues and can be just as expensive to own as a 996. In fact with 996 prices down where they are today I'd say they're an absolute bargain, especially earlier cars in top condition.

do'h that should have been a c4 not a c4s.

I havent thought about the after market waranty side of things tbh.

Northway porsche are about 8 miles from me an after extensive googling and a face to face visit and a chat with one of the guys there I think thats where my 996 will go when I get one.

Tyres seem to be from £ 170 to £250 a corner for rears and a bit less for fronts.

More than an s2000 but as I'll be doing about 5K miles a year I suspect a set every 12-18 months wont break the bank.

the 996 is the one I want, I just need to test drive a few of the corect vintage to make my mind up about the auto and weather I want a c2 or a c4.

I've driven the whole range apart from the latest model 911 at various porsche days at silverstone but they were all new cars with less than 10k miles

I think the c4 only comes into its own in the wet, but the c2 is pretty safe handling anyway. It may or may not be an issue for you, but the c4 also loses a lot of its front boot space due to the front diff.
