Can someone with a better knowledge of discs than me verify that these discs need replacing, the Cayman's due in for his minor service next month, and I don't want to here them say, "we need to talk about these discs...again". It went into the free service clinic a couple of months ago and they said they were excessively coroded and MUST be replaced.

Also, can you tell from the images the condition of the drop links and bushes?? I have a very slight knocking at low speed, (another thread talks about this), but I don't know how you can tell if their shot. Is it a case of swapping and seeing if it works??

p.s. why isn't the back of my disc shiny like the front?

Thanks Guys!!!

wow thats one st dirty car and those discs looked well and truly fked to me - plus, if its actually been driven, i would say that either your pads or calipers are fked too!

Rule of thumb - discs should be shiny :-)

I'm very surprised that you have an MOT with those discs.

Do you park outside overnight in the rain?

If not you need to start drying the brakes off before you garage the car or get used to buying discs.
Pad wear is easy to assess but they will insist on new pads with the discs so irrelevant really.

Sorry, but I think that they may have indicated a safety problem for you and your passengers here!

Better to be safe? rolleyes

They look f**ked to me.

Is the car under warranty?

If not just get oem disks and pads.

I had 2 sets of the disks and pads from Porschshop (/awaits the flamers) but they were branded Pagids and performance was identical to the original Porsche items but half the price. Any garage could fit them for you.

The car is garaged, and driven daily, but I'm not heavy on the brakes, which I probably should be to clear the stuff off.

It's 6 years old now, with 34,000 so its probably due them.

So, that's that then! Right, any recommendations for discs and pads?

Hence the questions! The plan is to get someone who knows what they're doing, and I get the best parts possible. Last time I checked, standard Porsche parts weren't the holy grail!

looks like your calipers need a refresh.

you can get oem disks cheap that's not an issue for about £140

Apart from covered in muck, what makes you think that? (Nice to know this stuff before having a garage tell you.)

Go out and do a few high speed full power stops to the point of the ABS almost kicking in, see if that cleans them up.

25% off at www.eurocarparts.com at the moment - enter your reg and click brake discs etc to see (full) prices but be aware that you will need dampening plates and wear sensors too, which'll add £30-40 to the cost.

Calipers are probably just dirty, excessive heat (unlikely in your case) can cook the piston seals but that's about it AFAIK on later cars/calipers (earlier types had a "plate lift" problem).

Putting it away wet shouldn't be a problem if it's used again within a day or two, but you should probably drive it in anger and enjoy it more often, for the benefit of the whole car, not just the brakes. smile

You can reuse the wear sensors but I wouldn't do anything till I'd given them a good hard duty cycle.

Pagid discs, pads and wear sensors are less than £200 all in from Euro Car Parts at the moment.

Just replace them - if you use "Porsche" parts expect to pay a lot more. If you need them fitted any decent mechanic can do it. An OPC will be £700ish which is frankly ludicrous.

Maybe get the car an underbody clean for Christmas!
