964 RS Left Or Right Hand Drive ?
Discussion
Im looking to sort a 964 rs at some point .
Im not sure where the steering wheel should be . On the left or on the right ?
I have no issues driving LHD . I will probably not use the car much in europe ( unless its a cup car and then the point is moot anyway as they are all lefty ) .
Advice please oh mighty PH .
I was thinking to just go on condition and colour ( must be black or maritime blue ) should steering wheel position be an issue ?
One final thing , take re sale out of it as I hope to never have to sell it .

The standard advice you'll get on here is to go for LHD because "that's how they're designed and its a purer driving experience".
I tried a LHD, my wife didn't like being in its passenger seat and overtaking is difficult enough on Devon A and B single carriageway roads, so I went for RHD and haven't regretted it.
If you're not fussed then obviously buy the best car you can for your money

I don't have a 964RS, but if I was buying one I'd prefer lhd, and I wouldn't want to pay more for rhd.
I drive both lhd and rhd drive cars and don't have any issues with lhd in the UK, in fact in some ways I prefer it. Bernard Aubrey said that a properly executed overtaking manoeuvre should be no more difficult whether lhd or rhd.

LHD is without power steering and that is quite a difference to RHD which had power steering. I've only ever driven LHD. They are brilliant. Friend had LHD in the UK and didn't have problems with steering on wrong side (car has many other compromises you have to live with in any case, such as hard ride, and LHD is just one more).
Back in 2007 when i bought my 64 RS i was looking for lhd but ended up with a rhd car as that particular car drove better than the lhd cars i saw at the time, ultimately buy on condition. The only difference is power steering in the rhd and a slightly more offset driving position (apparantly, can't say i noticed). I have a black rhd late RS which is nicely original and honest, which i might sell in the new year as its just gathering dust really, which is criminal.
I've driven both on and off track. Would not bother me either way. As usual buy on condition. RHD RS's have power steering again which does not matter. RHD fewer build numbers will be more expensive. I'm sure with modern dampers you can easily iron out the harsh ride without compromising the handling.

do RSs' have more offset than normal 964's? can't says ive noticed a problem in mine over 7 years
Nope, but those with lefthookers often claim that the righthand drive car suffers from a slightly offset driving position, frankly i find mine entirely comfortable even after a long schlep. From what I've seen over the last few years the premium for RHD (due to lower numbers) has all but disappeared. Mostly due to the euro/pound exchange rate making UK LHD cars appealing to continental buyers and therefore prices for LHD cars going up. Therefore LHD or RHD choice is now more about condition and which suits you best rather than price.
you'll get an 80 litre Fuel tank with LHD but only 60 with RHD (tank has to be smaller to accommodate Steering Column) plus pedals have a greater offset in the RHD making the seating position less comfortable and you'll find a greater re sale market with LHD........so LHD all the way ol' boy

If you are buying an RS you should take the colour out as well. I was thinking to just go on condition and colour ( must be black or maritime blue ) should steering wheel position be an issue ?.

Just work on the condition first, then the service history then the miles. IMHO
Not a bad problem for 2012

LHD then mate easy decision, for me sod the purity, balance, yadda yadda, couldnt care less, I've driven hundreds of leftys but still swapping between RHD daily runners & then in a LHD never feel comfortable & have to think about every gearshift, & have messed up many- thankfully not expensively, which is not what I want to be doing when giving it the Johnny Big Potatoes. Are many many folks who do the RHD daily driver & swap to LHD plaything successfully, perhaps my tiny brain is just not good at coping with it.
Your CGT has to be LHD, the new 964 is also? & assume the 993RS too? in which case is has to be a lefty as a RHD road & track thrasher will make you feel the odd one out & that merc- if you still have it? is/was RHD? but has the bader spakomatic box anyway so just the road positioning thats diferent & 964 is a tiny narrow car anyway, so thats a small change.
There are more LHD cars, so you'll get more choice. Although there is that nice Blue one one here, that seems quite reasonably priced for the recent RHD cars that I've seen.
If you want a road car, then powersteering etc, isnt going to make too much difference I would think. You dont say what you want to use it for. As for colour, I'm sure if you wait long enough one will come up in the right colour, but you may need to wait awhile.
I think its a good time to buy, prices have softened a little I think.

.....LHD for me.....not that I would be in a position to buy one in forseeable future.....and let's face it they have better roads for driving such a car on the continent unless you live in the depths of drakest Wales or Scotland where there ain't too much traffic.....araort from sheep....and for re-sale if you ever want to sell it Europe would be the place to sell.....my two cents worth.
RHD used to command an (up to) £10-15k premium over LHD but that is no longer the case. As Steve (Boxsey) said the strong Euro has meant LHD prices have gained, and of course many LHD cars advertised in the UK have been trailered by a certain German dealer and now have homes in Europe or are sitting in a warehouse as prices climb higher.
Certainly in the past couple of years a number of RHD cars have gone across to Hong Kong where I assume they fetch big money judging by the willingness to pay the UK asking price by, I believe, a prudent HK based dealer.
I own a 964RS with the wheel on the left and wouldn't have it any other way. For me sitting on the left adds to the sense of occasion of driving the car. Having driven a number of non-PAS cars in the past I don't miss power-steering either. Also (admittedly a tiny point) sitting on the left helps at tolls when making European trips - Le Mans, Spa, etc.
If you already have a LHD cars, and as you say have no reason to think you'll sell it in the future, I would be looking at the Maritime RHD one which seems to be for sale again in Harrogate (unsure why as a few weeks ago it seemed to be sold).
If at any point in the future you do need to turn that car back into cash, the Maritime Blue RHD car will be a rare RHD by then (certainly in the UK if cars keep going to HK). AlsoI imagine there would be a strong HK/China market for the car in what seems to be a very well-liked colour for a 964RS.
