Tip's aren't everyones cup of tea.

A cab is the best value IMO.
So in a word he should pick up a nice car for 20K max with good miles and good history.

When I tried a 993 cab prior to buying my 993 C4 coupe it had alot of flex (as did the Targa which is based on the cab). I'd go for a coupe!

Great cars. I personally do not have a problem with the tiptronic box. A very relaxed drive. Get a thorough pre purchase inspection done. Fearnsport at Silverstone would be my recomendation in your area. What to look for. Corrosion, oil leaks and if the car looks genuinly maintained. My other halfs 993C2S tip had over a 100,000 miles on the clock, looked and drove like new.

Specifically in respect to the tiptronic gearbox, I've never heard of anyone having any problems mechnically with them. So basically look for all the usual 993 points when buying (PPI highly recommended, as everyone says) - rust around (under) the front and rear screen rubbers; worn shocks (assume shot if on Monroes and not changed recently); damp under the carpets (blocked sunroof drain etc); worn/perished rubber door and bonnet seals (door seals are not cheap); worn spoiler gear (will make a racket when lifted manually using the internal switch); dropping oil could be cam cover gaskets (not expensive) but using oil (blue smoke when running/reved) could be a v. expensive engine rebuild. There may be a puff of white smoke on start up (normal, but should happen only occasionally) - this should clear immediately; 'clack' on opening the door will be a broken check strap - not critical, but £400+ to repair properly; ensure panel gaps are consistent - missing original under bonnet paper spec label may indicate front accident that required bonnet replacement.

Otherwise checks for general condition and everything working as you would when buying any car.

Four new Porsche shocks will cost £1350 and fitting will be 6 hours labour at £85-ish an hour, plus Geo on top of that, plus any worn suspension parts which I guarantee they will find along the way if the suspension hasn't been recently refreshed. Any suspension work on these cars can easily reach £2500. I had a tip and it was no trouble, but I got fed up with the gearbox.

Found this.

I haven't seen this car but looked ok in the photos.

Must have beed registered in France?
This would need checking.

Just a thought.

What is that bizarre thing stick on the steering wheel?

I like the bit about 'these cars are changing hands for well over £20k'.... sure, but not Cabriolet Tiptronics.

..well i would contest that having spent considerable time looking for exactly one like this. All the one's i have seen were well above 20k (same time last year) and i ended up having to pay 24k for a mint example with only 2 owners and 30k on the clock.

Buy on condition would be my advice as repairs can be quite costly. I have had mine (wife's car) for a year and it is truly rewarding. Great drive and excellently built quality. These cars are classics in the making.
