Hello and a very happy new year to everyone,

I have a 986 which I love. I now want to 'upgrade' to a 996 for my 120 mile a day round trip commute. I looked seriously at a 2000 996 TT with 110k miles and had a test drive but I think £20k is too much for me to pay for a car of that vintage. I've no doubt it's an excellent buy though so to make my mind up I have (as ever) some questions:

I loved the short throw gearbox. Can that be found on a 996?

Just how much slower will a C4S or C2/4 be than the turbo? I did get my foot down a bit and it was a rush so is the standard 911 much slower or is it still Very Rapid? I know I could try one but I need to get my search results completed and will be looking at visiting RSJ and 911V next week.

I will get a C2/4 or more likely a C4S which Must Have PSE. The C4S in the Clarkson video (the one with the boobies) gets a bit of a slating as the 'pay more for less' 911 but I think it looks fablus.

Any comments very happily received unless you're out at a NYEve party. Which you should be. As indeed should I.

Short shift can be fitted.

Up to about 80mph not much in it then the turbo flies away.

NA engine suits town driving more as more responsive.

Callughan, Turbo is a second quicker to 60mph and quicker still to 80mph.

Hmmm....just read this from a 2010 post:

ive had both ..C4s isnt a patch on a TT in any respect..unless a red rear reflector is top priority!Kept my near C4s for 3 months and got bored..kept the much older tt for 2 years and never fell out of love with it..c4s dull..tt awesome and mechanically far superior.

But 20k for a 110,000 miler...just feels odd to me I suppose. Maybe need to get over it. My drive is 15 miles of fast A roads then M25 and it's a 5am so no traffic to speak of

Is that perhaps really ragging it though with concomitant tyre / clutch wear etc? I honestly didn't feel like it was a mega fast vehicle. I've been in a GTR which made me spontaneously laugh out loud time and again and I have a ZZR1400 when I want to go crazy fast but the TT just didn't throw me back in the seat. The 65 year old salesman sitting next to me may have helped in this though

Look for a lower mileage Turbo. They are better than the 4S,all though the 4S is a good car.

The turbo is way faster!

Shop around for one with less miles on it.

I'm basing this on the races I have had with turbos.

Also if you compared a tiptronic turbo with a manual 996 the difference is even smaller.

996
0-100kmh 5sec
0-160kmh 11

996 Turbo tip
0-100kmh 4.8
0-160kmh 10.4

That does not look right. My 997tt will do 0-60mph in 3.7 seconds. So the 996 turbo should just be a little over that....

Cracking. To me at least - those times are identical. I'm not a racing driver so 0.2 means zilch.

Not at all, maybe you drove a poor example. Its not very fast and the main difference between the turbo and C4S is of course the engine as they have same suspension, brakes. Once you decided buy the best condition one you can afford as there are many not maintained very well. I was in a similar situation in 07 when I bought my C4S, if I didn't have Porsche warranty probably would buy turbo.

Figures are from from Porsche.

997 Turbo actually is 3.7 to 62smile Totally different set up, more advanced 4WD system, VTG, 59hp and 88tq more, unlimited shift pattern tiptronic etc....

996 Turbo manual will hit 60mph in 4.2 secs, 100mph in under 10secs.As for tip no idea, but for sure they are slower un like the new PDK which is faster.
