hi,

i have been reading over on rennlist regards (just more than a few) clutch pressure plates letting go at very low mileage (on road & track).. seems the problem is the rivets holding the pressure plates together can't handle the torque, st it and (on the odd occasion) fire through the transmission housing/casing.. result = new box.. wtf!!!

cars in the states that have suffered this problem are being given the 4.0L rs upgraded clutch pressure plate (rivets replaced by bolts)..

most of the discussion is regards warranty..?

as we have one of these fine machines landing in our stable at the end of this week, i would just like to know of any similar cases over here?... although i hope not!

The 3.8 pressure plate is nowhere near enough, the extra torque from the 3.8 kills it.
The 4.0 had a changed PP and this is what is now used on the 3.8s. All 3.8 parts were pulled from shelves and replaced with this new part but of course no recall.

If you don't drive like a granny get it in and try to get it swapped under warranty. I'm sure you can feel the clutch not being quite right when you test drive it wink

Btw. If you are lucky it will blow when it goes. If you aren't it'll go out of balance at first as one strap comes off and you can add a new crank etc to the repair bill by the time you realise.
Want me to tell you how many 6 cups I've seen do this when owners didn't pick up on and query the change in feel.
Btw you would need to be pretty special to lunch the trans housing. Normally it's just usual clutch blown stuff and a new flywheel if you don't deal with it all promptly.

The 4.0 PP is super nice and very expensive.

I know of 1 UK 997.1 GT3 owner who has had this problem, with Porsche not accepting this as full fault.

True, hence how he found out the potential root cause of the destroyed box, reading Rennlist. There was no previous benchmark example in the UK. He reads PH so I'll leave it at that as I don't know the full back and forth 'discussion' with Porsche GB.

Nah. It's a step down from the Cup PP (3.8 is the 6cup one I believe). I've little run time with the 6cup one. I always use 3 plate tilton but this won't fly on the street.
Failure rate on 6cup PP is high though, possibly due to lightness of flywheel (2/3 the weight of street lwfw) but who knows.
It's leaving me little place to go so will prob just plump for the big one.

you would think that porsche would just recall (or at least advise re the situation) all 3.8's to the severity of the problem.. so simply the p/p could be replaced without the danger of the box being taken out as a result of owner negligance.. clutch replacements are chaper than gearbox replacements?

"The 4.0 had a changed PP and this is what is now used on the 3.8s."

Installed a 4.0 clutch today on my 2010 GT3 with dual mass flywheel and had to modify the pressure plate.

The "extra" thread on the 3 screws (forward facing) needs to be removed otherwise they will touch in the bell housing and the engine will (can) not turn over.

My 3.8 went last month. Porsche said not covered under warranty and if I replaced with a 4.0 they would not extend the warranty. I did question it and complained but they said it's very unusual which I did disagree with!!

3k later!!
