My brother has just picked up a spanky-new Cayman R, however it doesn't have the usual VTS fob/system that I thought was standard on all Porkers in the UK these days. Is this correct for the model? Also I'm guessing that to keep the warranty intact the tracker (which he needs to fit for his insurance) will have to be the same Cobra unit they normally fit to other cars, and I suspect will have to go via the OPC too?

Beautiful car otherwise, I'm just a bit puzzled on this one.

Interesting question. VTS comes on all 911s but always used to only be an option on Boxsters/Caymans (which makes sense as the majority of those fall beneath the £50k threshold that most insurers use for whether to insist on one). The curious part is that the car configuration no longer has it on the options list for the 987s, so possible that it is now a dealer fit item that they will have to speak to an OPC about?

Yup, I just did the same checking on the Porsche configurator as well and found the same thing. Looks like the cost for a CobraTrak 5 is about £900 via a specialist, so I can only imagine what the cost will be via an OPC but it may be the only way sadly.

I see that the cost for VTS on the cofigurator for the 911 is £1140 so I would think it will be quite a bit more to have it retrofitted by an OPC? If your brother doesn't mind not having it fitted it might be cheaper to change to an insurance company who dont require the tracker.

I think you'll be over £1k at OPC. Shop around for an insurance company that doesn't need tracker. Try First-Point insurance. Speak to Gary Hooker - Direct Dial: 01604 498868. On the GTS the ins co didn't need a tracker as it was less than £75k.

Unfortunately this has all come a little bit too late and he's already got his insurance taken out for the CR, so is a little bit tied in (and to be fair, because of his age he's not going to get a much better deal than with Admiral sadly) with regards to insurance.

It's a bit annoying in one respect as everything was all done and dusted, and now he's actually got the car it's a bit frustrating that there's still this huge issue to get past. It doesn't seem to bother him that much, but it would do me if I'd got £50K worth of car sat there technically uninsured!

Lesson learnt I guess, thanks for the confirmation chaps. smile

My info is they are fitted as standard to all Porsche models you just have to activate it. My Cayman came with it. 2011 model.

Check this link

It does look like it is an option and that "factory fitted prep" is there to accept the VTS

Be careful with dealer-fitter trackers. My 2004 986 came with one fitted by the OPC I bought it through but because it wasn't a Porsche item, it meant I couldn't extend the Porsche warranty.

I had mine retro fitted by my OPC for around £900 ish.
I wouldn't have bothered but I changed car mid term and the ins co insisted I had one.

I think it's the case that most (all?) OPC will always spec there Boxster/Cayman demonstrator vehicles with VTS but that many people buying new don't bother. Sounds as though your brother would have done had he known that it did not come as standard. A shame and suprise that the OPC did not point this out although I guess they'd argue that they can't second guess every piece of kit that you might want if you didn't know it was standard (which is pretty much everything on a Porsche wink )

Quickly scanning the above it sounds as though the insurance quote was based on the understanding it would have VTS. Is this actually mandatory / would the premium rise significantly if the insurance was amended to non-VTS? I know these things are very much a personal preference but I have VTS on mine but leave it switched off. It wasn't needed for my insurance (car is worth just shy of £50k) and my experience of having it in year-1 of my previous Boxster ownership is that it's a bit useless ie Cobra took 48 hours to phone me one time when I forgot to carry the fob so had it been a real theft the car could have been in a container in Eastern Eurpoe by then! There again, if someone nicked my car I'm not sure I would want to see it again anyway which is another reason I don't both with VTS - would rather have the money and move on.

But, as said, I know this is a personal preference and I appreciate your brother's frustration here.

Interesting comment about the OPC demo cars, as that's exactly what this car is/was. I guess that's why we both kinda figured it would have the VTS, as I was with him when he purchased it.

Just had the conversation with him regarding telling the insurer it doesn't have the tracker and sucking up any extra cost, but he's of the opinion that he'd rather have one regardless given both the scarcity of the car and how Peridot isn't exactly a subtle colour either wink Totally see your POV about not wanting the car back if the worst did happen, must admit I've got it on my 997 and Cobra have been fantastic with regards to their service in terms of instant alerts even when it's always been my fault for not picking the fob up.

One thing I am slightly disappointed with is that the CR with PSE sounds nicer than my 997.2 C2S with PSE, could just be my imagination though!

I think you only need to go Porsche VTS if the car is under extended warranty? Presuming the CR has 2 years manufacturers i would stick the cheapest aftermarket jobbie on it you can find. Fingers crossed your OPC won't notice anyways whistle

Trouble is if he wants to renew the warranty on the extended terms, he would then have to remove it and fit the VTS anyway. Probably wouldn't notice, you're absolutely right, but I don't think it's worth taking the risk.

Just come back from a very quick blat in it and I managed to convince him to chuck me the keys, I have to say I'm very jealous now as it's easy a match for my 911 on the roads round here, feels very composed despite/because of the fixed rate suspension and the steering is to die for. Sounds a bit special too smile Wonder if I can find one in black and chop mine in against one...

By the time warranty renewal comes around (if he still has the car!) it will be worth far less than the required amount that insurers require a tracking device wink

couple of hundred squid vs *over* £1k. I know what i'd do.

I don't think it is your imagination. I was so disappointed with the sound of my c2s with PSE that I got rid of it.

I tried a CR a few weeks ago and even without the PSE switched on it sounded better.
