Has anyone here ever drove a Singer 911? Are there many in the UK? If you're into that sort of thing...wasn't there someone else doing something similar? Anyone know any owners? What do they think of them - everyday useable?

Unit 11 did something similar as a bespoke project for a client (the car was destined for the client's home in Hong Kong). It was a 2.8RSR-alike but made to what the guy wanted, so not aiming for a faithful reproduction - the type of thing the Americans call a "resto-mod" I think.

The engine was based on a 964 but didn't look like it (looked like a period engine), and ran Motec, helping it push out around 360bhp+. The engine alone cost around £40,000 but even then the whole car was still a LOT less than a Singer (which the buyer has less say in the design/specification of, according to an article on one a year or two ago - an orange USA car with a 9M engine). I was told to take it up the road once to see what I thought of it, when it was still there having bits and pieces done (i.e. before the owner had even taken delivery) - I didn't dare. eek

A Paul Stevens 911 spyder features in Evo this month (issue 166, feb '12).

£150,000!

I suppose it buys something unique, but still that is a lot of money, which could buy some pretty exotic 'real' Porsche.

That's about haf the price of a Singer though IIRC smile

There's a Singer article in the current Total911 mag that may answer a few questions for you OP.

I am in two minds about the Singer. I think it is potentially a stunning bit of engineering mixed with dreamy 911 fantasies but as mentioned previously on here it does put you into the realm of some real Porsche exotica.

Paul Stephens also does cars which are similar to Singer www.psautoart.com. There are only 4 Singers and I don't think any of them are here.

I've got one of PS's early builds (no. 5, which was done in 2005), and I love it. It is not as exotic as the Singer products (e.g. aluminium bonnet etc. instead of carbon fibre), but it also cost a fraction as much - you can get something approximating the Singer car, based on a 964 and with a 3.8, for probably something in the region of £85-100k. Probably 90% of the Singer for 40% of the cash. Still a lot of dosh, but there will never be many of these either (I think there are still less than 30) and for a certain type of pork fan they tick a lot of boxes.

Ben, were you the North American chap who was at the Bedford meet a while ago? If so, your car looked fantastic. If not, your car's profile pic doesn't look too bad either.

I love the old shapes. My mate's well sorted 964 is one of the nicest cars I've ever driven.

Lovely car then! I headed straight over to it when you pulled in. Not often enough you see such special 911s. Though, conversely, perhaps that's part of why we like 'em so much.

Anyone can pull a bit of carbon out of a mould. It takes a very special man with a very big beard to hand form an aluminium bonnet. smile
