Pop down to your local DVLA office with your cheque book, V5, MOT, insurance and tax disc along with your certificate for the new reg and they will give you the form to fill in, wait a few weeks, then you get a letter saying its all good and you can get the plates made up.

Their general telephone number is also very helpful.

You will receive all the required paperwork when you get the certificate through the post. Any other forms you will need are available for download here:http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/PersonalisedRegAndNumberPlates/DG_4022576 Then you need to send that all off to your local DVLA office. After a week or so the transfer documents will arrive with a certificate which will allow you to get new plates printed and fitted to the car. Its all quite straightforward but if you need any other info let me know.

You need a V317 form from the DVLA website which you complete and take, together with your V5, license, MoT certificate and £80 fee to your local DVLA office. You will need a new tax disc (which they will issue you, transferring any credit remaining on the old license) and a new V5 (which will be posted to you).

My local office (Northampton) handled the application very well - hurry up though as the Government are talking about closing all of the local offices.

Should have added that if you have entitlement to the plate already, take the plates with you to the DVLA office because the plates on the car and the tax disc need to match.

Do they then swap the old tax disc for a new one with the new reg?

They print you a new tax disc with the new reg.

If you have bought the plate from the dvla all the fees will have been paid.
Go to the DVLA local office when you receive the paperwork from Swansea.
Take your V5 or green slip if you have just bought the car, MOT cert and thats it.
They will assign the number there and then give you a new tax disc and then you have 48 hours to swap the plates.

Or you can send it all off and do it via post

We dont have personal plates here in Ireland Republic but I managed to bag in 2008 for my new GT3 08 C 673. If you look at this in italics and squint your eyes it reads gt3.

I know, childish, but it works, even the plod who stopped me the once said that looks well , give it a few revs when you take off !

Final footnote is that if it is under warranty then will you need to tell them too? Also if it has a tracker then they should probably also be told. Your insurer certainly will need to know.
