996 Turbo Dilema
Discussion
Hi All,
I've been reading the posts on this brill forum for a while now and have a bit of a dilemma..
I have always wanted a Porsche 911 Turbo, and now am in a position to buy one. I have around £27k to spend.
My question is do i buy a nice 996 example now (not a fan of the interior however) or wait for the 997 Turbo in another 18-24 months to hit £30-32k?.Thanks!

You only live once. Get a nice 996tt and have some fun! You can always upgrade to a 997tt...
Exactly! What will you do for the next 18-24 months otherwise - get the bus?
You should be able to get a lovely car for £27k and I wouldn't think it will be a particularly expensive ownership experience either, but besides that (nothing's for free) you will enjoy it.

Buy now.
I have money burning a hole in my pocket for a 996 turbo, just need to find the right one!
You have been looking for ages!! Perhaps you need to broaden your criteria a little? I know how it is, just wanting the perfect spec...but sometimes that one may not come along, and if it does spec wise, something else will be wrong(like missed a service or too many owners) there's always something!I have money burning a hole in my pocket for a 996 turbo, just need to find the right one!

Im not sure how we are supposed to answer that one! Surely its purely your choice and depends on your financial and personal circumstances?I've been reading the posts on this brill forum for a while now and have a bit of a dilemma..

The longer you wait, the lower the price will be (generally) but the closer you get to death.
Can you afford to get a 996 now and trade up in say 2-3 years?
MTR
Could always buy this one a snip at £50K for a 2000 year

I am waiting for a 997. Can't get on with the looks of the 996, inside and out. If i wanted pork before the 997 drops below 40ish i'd go 993 i think.
(I'm sure they are amazing but i couldn't love something with those damn headlights)
Having owned both 997 much better too tho not if its twice the price(I'm sure they are amazing but i couldn't love something with those damn headlights)
Buy this (or similar for a lower price)

Don't crash it, sell it for similar money when you have the additional funds for a 997 turbo!

great comments, many thanks. i suppose i could upgrade later on to the 997. my thinking though is that if i bought a 996 now how much would it depreciate in 2 years when i sell it? i am itching to get a TT and may just bite the bullet on the 996!
Don't worry about depreciation! Who cares - it is what it is. You gotta have some fun!

You say you're not a fan of the 996 interior. Get a turbo, drive it like you stole it, and you won't have the chance to look at anything except the road ahead and your mirrors.
HTH.
When you floor it you won't even have chance to look in the mirrors and in any case probably no need as there won't be much coming up behind you! HTH.

I personally think this may not be as importamt as you think....911 Turbos in any form are amazing cars and feats of engineering. I believe there will always be a market.
Whilst N/A 996 models (like mine
) will have a constant depreciation, Turbos will always be a little firmer. The downside is the ongoing maintenance costs. But then you get close to a genuine rocket ship for 'normal' money.Depending on loads of factors, I would get the Turbo you obviously want now and upgrade a little later - 24m is a long while to wait.... whilst cars get older; so do you!!!
Go for it!
Buy a good one and you wont lose your shirt

ps - WHilst the above is valid, we are close to actively looking at '7 Tirbos now as that happens to be where WE are

Less than a 997 is going to depreciate between now & then. So the gap to trade up will be smaller in 2 years (probably).I'm sure a little bit of man-maths would prove that buying a 996 now would actually save money in the long run.
