Insurance (and log book) in wife's name??!
Discussion
Problem is Uberrima Fides Utmost faith requirement in insurance policies. Unique to insurance policies this requires a very high level of absolute honesty.
I would be very careful to get every detail correct on the insurance. If there is an accident the insurer may look for details to avoid claims.
I have seen this but rarely. Insurers do not want business where the real driver of the car is not the insured driver of the car. Your risk.

So what about the OP's idea breaks utmost good faith?I would be very careful to get every detail correct on the insurance. If there is an accident the insurer may look for details to avoid claims.

I am pondering having the 911 in the wife's name for cheaper car insurance, with me as a named driver. Potentially save a few hundred pounds.
It doesnt REALLY matter whose name is on the log book does it?
The name on the V5 is the registered keeper, has no specific bearing to owner, can easily be wifey. Carries at least one specific legal obligation (re S172), but that's about it.It doesnt REALLY matter whose name is on the log book does it?
Wifey can insure it.
Provided the matter of the main driver is agreed with the ins co, all is fine. The main driver may or may not be the RK and may or may not be the owner. You may even struggle to work out who the main driver is as it's a second car for both. Tell that to the ins co and ask them for the definition of main driver that they are looking for.

Note these can be 3 separate people:It doesnt REALLY matter whose name is on the log book does it?
1) Owner [person who paid for it, or who holds legal title, could be a lease company for example]
2) Registered keeper [person who is responsible for the MOT, tax etc, could be a husband]
3) Main driver [person who drives it more than any other person, could be the wife]
So long as you answer the insurers questions honestly you'll not have a problem. They will generally require the insurance policy holder to the main driver. However the owner and registered keeper doesn't make much difference to the premium.

I have my car insured under my wife's name, but me on the V5.
I specifically asked the question of my insurer, that this scenario was ok given that I would be driving it 99% of the time. They said that was completely fine and that with married couples it makes no odds.
So my advice would definitely be to check with your insurer - there are no hard and fast rules.

The name on the log book isn't an issue between you and your wife but you must declare who is the main driver to your insurance company. I took over my wife's last car when she got her leased car and didn't bother changing the V5 from her to me as the insurance companies I contacted were not bothered - she remained the registered keeper but I was the main driver and policy holder.
