Afternoon.... First post so please go easy...

Recently purchased my Cayman S at the tail end of last year (still under porsche warranty)and have noticed it is using up a large amount of Oil.

I took it to the OPC and they checked it over and no faults found! Was asked to drive for 500 miles then return to have Oil usage measured.

They recorded 0.8L used in 517 miles and advised this was "within tolerence".

Now I am new to Porsche ownership but this from what i have read on here and else where this doesnt appear to me to be "normal" - is it?

Any expereinces with similar levels over a short time? They have offered to take it back in for another check but im not sure if its maybe worth taking it to another specialist to get checked...

many thanks

Can only tell of my experience.
Used to own a Cayman S Sport Ltd edition bought it with 11k on the clock
sold it with 14.5k on it never put any oil in never needed it.
Have heard some use a bit where others dont.

Had a cayman s for a year, did 30k miles in it and never needed to top the oil up - apart from it's service...

They generally use bit of oil when new but then settle down after about 1500-2000 miles. I've had my 2007 S for nearly 2 years, have covered around 16000 miles and have not put a drop in it between services.

Its a 55 plate so its not a new one.... feared the consensus might be signs of engine failure!

Its under warrenty so im not to oconcerned on that front - but do i take it back to the OPC or try a specilist to get it checked again?

Isn't it about 1 litre per 1000 miles as the Porsche recommended max oil useage? Even that seems OTT, but your car would average out at more than that. Check the manual, it might say something in there.
I'd a Cayman S from new, 06, for 15,000 miles and never put more than 0.5 litre of a top up in the whole time I had it.
Good Luck anyhoo.

I have a 2006 Cayman S and mine uses a little oil but not an amount I am concerned about. It perhaps uses a litre every 5,000 miles. I would keep an eye on it and if it continues, I'd insist that your OPC does some more thorough diagnostic work.

Aside from the worry about the engine, 0.8l of premium high performance oil in 500 miles will kill any hope of respectable economy from the car.

Thanks for the replies guys!
Pretty much what I was suspecting as I didn't think this was "normal"!

Will keep a eye on it and see when it gets low again and take it back for a check!!

Bought a Cayman S Sport last April, covered 8000 miles since and the digital oil level hasn't dropped 1 bar.

Had two other Cayman S over the last few years and neither of those used a drop either.

it is worth investigating mack, but i hope you didn't think i was being snidey with that post. personally i wouldn't be happy with that much oil consumption, i can only compare my old csl which was renowned for liking a drop of oil, & it used probably a half litre for every 1500 of (very) hard use.

just make sure you keep on at your opc, it may be nothing but if it does turn out to be something more serious you don't want them fobbing you off.

not at all... Simple and to the point! Didn't mention it myself as wasn't wanting to suggest it! Thought it might be though... I will keep on them as I'm not happy if that's going to continue...
Keep forgetting to check when I start the engine will check where it's at tomorrow!! Lol
was filled up 200 miles ago so maybe down a bar by now!

In 13k miles I've not put a drop in mine.

I'd reject the car unless you intend to keep under P warranty for the time you have it.
Doesn't sound good using that amount of oil.

They recorded 0.8L used in 517 miles and advised this was "within tolerence".......... I smell shyte

If the manual says it could use up to 1l in 1000 miles, using 0.8l in 517 is way over what should be expected...

That was the quoted amounts from the OPC. Will send email on Monday and get it checked over and question the tolerance.

I thought 1 litre/600 miles was the maximum?

I have had my 07 CS since new and after driving 45k miles in it, I have only topped up with 1 litre of oil, apart from oil changes at services. I smell a rat.

I purchased my Cayman S in March Last year, from well a respected (non Porsche) dealer so no OPC warranty, oil consumption was about 1 litre for 900 miles, which I thought was a lot compared to previous expeiences, but after talking to the OPC and looking at various forums was assured it was 'normal' or 'within tolerances' so that put my mind at rest for a while but it was still nagging at me and it seemed to be getting slowly worse, and without an OPC warrantly I only had a finite time to sort it if it turned out to be something more serious.
So after a few debates with the OPC and the supplying dealer I paid (£200) for the OPC to do a borescope examimination of the engine, and it turned out to have the scored bore issue.
Without any issue or question the supplying dealer paid for all the work to be done at an OPC at no cost to me, and since then it has not used a drop in 4000 miles, and car is under Porsche warranty now.

So I guess its true that some cars use oil naturally, whilst some don't (my tuned RS4 Turbo 460hp does not use a drop between 10-12k services and it gets used hard), if it was me and its still under warranty I would get some piece of mind and get an internal look see even if it costs a couple of hundred quid

what is your mileage now? how much total oil have you burned? are you still in the break-in period (first 2,000 miles)? you shouldn't be burning oil beyond the the break-in period, as the rings should be seated. i just took delivery of a new cayman S (prod. Oct 2011). i burned 0.8 quart in the first 1,000 miles in a run from san francisco to san diego and back. the service mgr at my dealer told me that's normal within the break-in period while the rings seat. are you observing the break-in protocol i.e. no full throttle starts, and not exceeding 4,200 rpm?
