Went for run in my 996 C4S Tip this morning. Drove for about an hour, mixture of motorways, A- and B- roads. Stopped for about 5 minutes, then started to head home. 2 or so minutes poodling along back road, then waiting to get onto dual carriageway. Traffic moving fast but saw a big enough gap and floored it; look in mirror to see huge cloud of oil smoke, which slightly cleared, then another big puff as I lifted. Then no more smoke. Settled into 70 "cruise" and checked instruments - no red lights, nothing on the OBC, normal oil pressure, everything as normal. I then drove the 50 miles or so home, and no amount of provocation on the way could generate a repeat, engine running absolutely sweetly from tick-over to red line.
I'm tempted to forget about it, but grateful for any suggestions as to what might have caused it.

Hi sticks, What colour was the smoke? if it was white I had a similar experience at a Castle Coombe trackday a couple of years ago on a very hot day,and driving at 7/8 tenths.
Nothing to worry about and there has been some earlier threads on here on the same subject which i am sure the IT geeks on here will repost as I cant be arsed as I have had a few jars this morning. Cheers Roy

Hi, it could be the start of an oil to air seperator failing. See if it happens again and if so get it checked out.

Roy - smoke was white. Thanks for reassurance. Tried search function but all I got was threads about smoke on start-up.
Sportsandclassic - any test for an OAS problem that a non-mechanic could perform?
