Personally I think 993's are overpriced and 996's are under priced.

Good cars at good prices are always available as some people just really need to sell. £22k budget for a 996 turbo shows plenty of results here, Autotrader, EBay and auction houses but whether they are all good, I'm not so sure but there will be a few good ones.

Your 993 I'd guess £16k ish?

I think 993's will start dropping as people start warming to 997's at today's prices and there is already love for the 991. I only think that 993 prices are good because the base 996's have such a bad reputation and people didn't 'upgrade'.

Sorry but I disagree. The 993 has been out of production for years - how long does it take for people to upgrade ?

With the exception of the rarer models I think that all the water cooled cars will continue to depreciate.

The 993 has already acheived classic status and good examples will continue to rise in value.

Ps a 997 Carrera (in my opinion) will be more fun to drive as an everyday car and generally a nicer place to sit than the 996 turbo. 993 will feel very old after having a drive in one.

I certainly dont think you are mad. 996T is a great car and fab value and you could get a decent one for 22k.

Going specifically off your description, your car might be worth 15-17k. But it depends on a multitude of variables.

Its really up to you, they are very different cars.

If you've been 'bitten by the 993 bug' I suspect you'll be disappointed by a 996 (turbo or non turbo). Whilst a 996 is very competant (and yes, I have driven one recently), for me it's looks fall way short of a 993 and the sense of occasion is missing - I could just as well have been driving any fast saloon.

You've got to drive one though - no point in relying on someone elses opinion. Doesn't matter how many positives you get for a 993, there will be just as many for a 996 on this forum smile.

Have you ever driven a fast saloon? I conclude that you haven't because the two do not remotely compare.

What do you mean by upgrade. Ask yourself what you are wanting to achieve or what do you expect to get out of the change and also what's the main use for the car ?

They are very different motors and suit different driving styles, different conditions and purposes. Also from a general 'feel' perspective, if you drive them back to back its almost inconceivable that they were actually made contiguously in the same year (1998). Such was the transition at HQ back then that they feel like there's a couple of decades between them. This could be a good thing or a bad thing depending on you.

If you want more performance, straight line or all weather AtoB, more useability and surefootedness then its no brainer, get a 996tt. Just don't expect the 996tt to be like a 993 but 'more of it' or a 'better 993'. Some of the things that you like about the 993 so much could be the very things that aren't really present in the newer car. Both excellent cars though and you cant go wrong IMO.

As ever, go and drive a few and make up your own mind.

There's no doubting which is the better car and quicker.
Lets forget about the values/air-cooled nonsense as not everybody buys into this and even though i have owned and love air-cooled 911's nothings forever and you move on, i now own a state of the art TV but the build quality of the one i owned 10 yrs may have been better, so what.

From a drivers perspective the 6T is far better place to cover ground quickly and a better handling machine.
Build quality, well i guess this goes to the 993, albeit there is nothing wrong with a 6t from a quality point of view. Residuals are purely down to supply and demand, there's loads of 6T's and if the boot was on the other foot then the 993 would be a damn site cheaper.
Looks is subjective so shouldn't be counted, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that stuff.

Long-term i guess then the 993 is the one to own but for smiles per pounds spent the 6T is the one for me, great value super-car and won every test unlike its older brother.

I think you'll struggle to get what I call "a good 993" at 22 grand, & if you do it'll be a long wait or pure good luck (it was luck for me, the right car just came up at the right time).

Oh I know the classifieds are full of them, but when you've viewed a lot the good ones are very few & far between & by good I mean:

Good colour combo
Low-ish miles (say sub 80k)
Good spec
Continuous history
No rust
No leaks
In fact just no mechanical issues at all

The cars that can claim to be good'uns very rarely come up nowadays as most folk realise what they've got (funnily enough I didn't but the misses did-she said I'd regret it!). I still browse the classifieds & when I read adverts you can practically pin point all their faults by what's not included in the copy.

A good 993 is going to buck the trend on most Porsches by holding good value & probably going up, there will always be a market for them.

Crags not like you to be off the pace! wink

OP's already got a 993 tip. He's thinking of swapping to a 996 turbo for £22k!

It's like you can read my mind.

The whole 993 vs 996 argument summed up right there!

I seem to have touched a (996) nerve. Yes, I've driven enough fast saloons to compare. Frankly I have been left underwhelmed every time I've driven a 996. The 997 is a giant leap forward, fast and comfortable, feels well screwed together. However, they are common and hence, putting aside the GT models, don't look special.

So now you can watch 5 blu-ray dvd's of Will Ferrel in the time it took you to watch 1 vhs copy of Caddyshack.

Does not compute.

It may not be as quick and it may not be as modern.

The sounds will make you smile though and you'll remember it a lot more fondly.

Other than that, just teasing.
