I go out of my way to show courtesy to other drivers on the road. I guess you’re the same to greater or lesser extents. I have been doing a straw pole of “rudeness” form motorists and have the following observations :

Rudest by far : Subaru Impreza turbo owners. Selfish, inappropriate speed, junction blocking, poor indicating

Politest : ??? you comment ??? I have focused on the bad – but who are the best ?

Personally I try not to act like the stereo type Porsche owner (except for speed!). Lots of different types of rude driving of course. I took a fellow 996TT at about 140 near Bisley on the weekend and felt a bit bad about that so may be I am a big hypocrite ?

I think it also depend where you are driving. I live near Bristol and most of the time you have to force your way out of turning etc. but the few time i've driven around Clifton Village people have been so nice from all types of cars (205s, 7 series BMWs, 4x4 Mercs, etc.). There are people who break every stereotype, even saw a new BMW 5 series indicate at EVERY opertunity the other day

However as a general rule I do find mums in 4x4s pretty unforgiving ;P

Me and 'Mrs Get' are also doing a 'wee' survey. We've noticed that (strangely enough) women are far less likely to thank you when you move over or let them in (One has to do a lot of that up here due to the single track roads). So Mrs Get has been totting up whilst I drive (I know, it's sad)

So far:

men: 14 total 12 thanked me for being courteous.
women: 7 total 3 thanked me for being courteous.

Mrs Get reckons it's because the ladies are thinking about a dozen other things as well as driving - this I find both probable and worrying.

Steve maybe the women haven't actually seen you?

Try under 185 mph, then they might notice

I think this is Possibly also because women are used to not having to say thank you as they feel entitled to the courtesy ?

When driving Speed Yellow 993RS in central London 80/90% of men thank versus 50/60% of women. When driving 2CV this figure almost reverses.....go figure!

In the mornings I have to nudge out of a side road onto a congested dual carriageway travelling at 5mph and get across to the far lanewithin 100 yards. In our old Metro this was no problem, in the Porsches it can be a nightmare

When in the Porsche I try to go out of my way to be courteous as part of my little bit to redress the image of 80's yuppies with red braces driving their Porsches like idiots. The people behind me probably hate me more than all the ones I am letting in from side roads

In the TVR I get let out at junctions. In the BMW I have to fight my way out. We certainly seem to hate BMW drivers in London and probably with good reason.

I agree that women seem to say thank you far less than men. Not sure why. In North London this could be due to them worrying about whether the husband is sleeping with the secretary or whether the husband will notice the nasty rash she seems to have developed.

To be honest, it is rare to find a polite driver in London these days.

<Controversial> I think it's because women don't even bloody notice when you let them in. They only see three feet directly in front of the front bumper. A space miraculously appears and they take it. <Runs for cover.>

Seriously though, I do find when I hold open lift doors for women, very few acknowledge whereas men say thank you much more. Why is that?

The worst? Women in 4x4's on the school run.

Young girlies in 205/206/Fiesta etc with one hand on phone the other with cigarette, no seatbelt and still able to give the w*nker sign -that takes some doing....Even worse when there are more than one in the car!!

Having my dog lean out of the window seems to help at junctions as ppl just smile and wave!

Women are worried you will construe a 'thankyou' as an invitation to shag!
