Taking your old Porsche to an OPC
Discussion
Is it just me or do any of the other older Porsche owners (the cars not the owners
) feel a bit “intimidated” taking their car to an OPC? I took my 968 to a local OPC today and whilst wandering round the ranks of shiny new 996’s and a Carrera GT
waiting for the service guy to come back, several obviously well moneyed perma-tan couples came, poked around some very expensive cars and then went. I got the distinct impression that my scruffy old 968 parked outside was a bit of an embarrassment to them TBH and they would rather I parked it round the side gate. Do I have an inferiority complex or has anyone else noticed this?

It's partly you , ie that's the way YOU feel based on the subtle messages all around you in the showroom, and partly 'that's the way it is' when the 911 retail product is £60k to £100 k new , apart from the entry level boxster at £35k ish . If you were a regular punter you would be chopping in every 3 years or so and adding to the virtuous cycle of consumerism....but you have deliberately chosen to go a different path. Your 10 year old motor ( ? ) might be better served by going to an independent spanner wielder with the knowledge / Bosch Hammer , being lighter on the wallet and easier on the psyche .
Lets face it, any OPC will take your money off you quite gladly. Whether its in the showroom, in the workshop or on the forecourt.
Last time I was in with my car, the showroom was full of brand new cars and through the workshop glass walls most of the cars were what Porsche would refer to as "classic models"
There is probably more potential profit for an OPC in repairing older models, air or water cooled.
The thing that always gets me with an OPC is when each member of staff that you come in contact with, quotes you from the "polite comments to punters" list like...
"Much more character in these older models I find, and this one sounds really nice, is that a special sports exhaust?"
Or, "Speed Yellow, I think that it was the best colour for a 993 and yours in such good condition"
Its usually timed perfectly with the moment they hand you the invoice, which is usually about £200 more than you expected!
I always feel slightly intimidated in an OPC because you have to get past the ladies on the marble reception counter to get in, they are all suited and booted and I dont dress up to go there and most staff look at you as if you as if you come to pinch one!

Well if the suited and booted lady has a nice enough arse I might be tempted to give it a pinch next time
Nice one Paul...Of course, I would love to have claimed that one as a deliberate double entendre, but alas, I am not that clever!
What one was meaning to say was, one allways feels out of place in ones jeans and a T-shirt in an OPC.

I have a 968 and I think that OPC's have very few mechanics that understand this car -- they are really into all the modern stuff instead.
The 968 engine is strong but it needs very careful attention when it comes to cam chains and the belts, IMO you need to seek out a good indy service garage that can do preventative maintainance.
i live in the East Midlands but have all my major services done at Hartech in Bolton -- before you say I am mad to go that way, they know their stuff, spend 5 minutes talking to Barry the owner and you will be convinced.
