Buying a Boxster (possibly)
Discussion
Hi,
I'm contemplating buy a used Boxster probably from a Porsche centre for the warranty and the finance options, I'm currently looking at several around the country from less than 12 months old to just over 2 years old, all offered with 2 years Porsche warranty.
Firstly I'm after some general advice regarding Boxsters, specifically the S model (not that I doubt my questions will be that specific), what are we talking for running costs, tax, fuel consumption, servicing, parts? Anything I should look for in terms of issues etc? Also is there any real desirables in terms of specification, I'm veering towards PDK but I've seen another car without PDK but pretty much everything else.
Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I guess all are gen 2,s with dfi engine then.
As for options, all personal, manual for me.
If it,s a only car, heated seats and xenons would be high on my list and the sports seats, the middle option.
Running is all there in black and white with fix priced services, so just ask your opc.

2-Year running costs on a new car here, it's a bloodbath, I would (and will) do it all again:

If you are on a budget be very careful with the price you pay for these Gen2's against the new model.
Unless its a kami-kazi type deal the OPC are offering you, I would go for the new model.
Be certain you need the "S", you will find the limits of UK roads (and 90% of most drivers abilities!) in a 2.9, no problem at all.
3.4L cars are more for those 5am hoons in the middle of no-where or motorway driving.

Good luck with the potential purchase. Some things to keep in mind:
- The option that has the biggest impact on the experience is PDK or manual. A real divider. Both have their followers so no real impact when it comes to trade in. Strongly advise you try both and go with what you prefer.
- Reliability wise. Given the age you suggest there is probably not much to worry about. Car is under warranty and any problems on launch are basically ironed out. One thing I always check is the discs, inside surfaces in particular. They are known to corrode through lack of use and insides can go unnoticed. My own experience is that the dealer will quickly sort any problems that surface post-purchase.
- Everyone has their preferred options and I would agree on Xenons but personally am less bothered about heated seats in particular. Just go for what you want but you do need to accept that if you go for that high spec car you saw it will not attract much of a premium over a medium spec car when it comes to trade in. Go for high spec if you want (I did) but just be aware of this.
- Unless your heart is really set on that particular car try to look for say 3 cars you like from different dealers (that are not part of the same group) and play the dealers off one another. It already was a buyers market, the new 981 around the corner only strengthens your position.

I was also undecided due to the impending new model BUT when you add in what would be basic desirable options the new car will become close to £50k or more so I looked at recent (demo) cars with decent specs at a good discount. Its becoming more of an issue not to have built in sat nav (even though after market units are generally better) so that was on my list, Ipod connectivity also and I would have liked sports seats, exhaust and xenons. Ended up with a 9 month old car with nav, heated sports seats, carrera wheels, Bose and Ipod connection at £17k off the new price (4k miles on the clock) and a decent finance package with the OPC warranty thrown in.
As a rule of thumb I budget that owning a car like this can cost £10k/year in depreciation, insurance etc..so its not a cheap hobby (this is my tenth Porsche and the rule holds pretty true).
The Gen2 car feels much better put together than my 2006 model that I traded and the engine is definately a step up in refinement and responses.
Good luck

Congrats. I bought a lightly used 3.4 PDK Boxster back in August then went on a fabulous trip with the good lady wife to Switzerland & have to say the car was superb.
As already mentioned it seems much better built than the gen 1 car's, exuding real solidity & remaining totally shake & rattle free, enjoy!

Looks good fella, hopefully we'll cross paths soon ...
Strange that the Exige was white with black wheels too!! Maybe it's a prerequisite of being from Cheshire?Wonder how you'll find it in comparison to the old Exige S you had ....
