On a Boxster Spyder? Just unplug it in the engine bay, that's all there is to it. Well, you might want to pop a couple of bags over the connectors to keep them clean and remember to plug it back in to work the actuators every few months, but there's nothing else to it.

Hi there

On a 911, lift the bootlid, as your looking at the engine its a brown plug on the right handside on the top of the inlet manifolds. Unplug this and PSE will always be open, a truly glorious sound when unplugged. biggrin

The hardest thing about doing this to a Boxster (in my case Spyder) is actually accessing the engine.

Star screwdriver required for the engine lid and remember how the polystyrene hood holder comes out!

And I can't quite see how it's illegal (possibly in Germany due to noise regs, but here?)

First you've got to fight your way past the hairdressing equipment.

Ooo, yeah. Those wires from the heated curlers get everywhere.

There's a guide on dspyda, the link is below.

http://www.dspyda.com./dspyda/Guides/Guides.html

Given the difficulty in getting to the PSE plug compared to a 911, if you want to maintain the ability to switch it on and off you should look at Carnewal's PSE remote. I've used it on a 911 and it very good.

there was a PHer called spy2010 that posted pics of the mod on his spyder in January 2011 I think but the thread has been deleted on PH when I tried searching for it. I wonder why.....?

shame, I could never figure out which plug it is on the 987.2 porsches.

There's only one plug - on top of the engine and pretty obvious when you see it.
If you follow the cabling you come to a thin plastic tube that moves the valves.

I think it's well worth doing -really gives the engine an aural lift!
(as long as it doesn't throw any fault codes deep within the ecu?)

Two dumb questions:

1. How do this differ from just pressing the exhaust button on the dash?
2. I thought I'd read somewhere that you can just remove a fuse. Would be a lot simpler for us mid-engined folk!

I'm guessing that neither of these are as good though...!

Have you thought this through? How will you minimise the disturbance to neighbours etc when you're driving about during antisocial hours?

I'm sure you'll feel embarrassed about the racket and annoyance you're causing when you're not out on the open road?

I thought that was the reason for being able to switch to quiet.

As I recall, the reason for being able to switch it is for some sort of "drive by" noise regulations in Germany, hence the quiet zone regardless of switch setting at town speeds.

I'm intrigued though. Do you really find the exhaust that loud?

I have to say that I don't, and although I haven't left the one on my 997.2 unplugged (mainly due to concern about how to cover the plug with something that wouldn't melt all over the engine!) I don't remember the last time I drove with it turned off.

I definitely don't find it embarassing, nor a racket at any speed...

Is the Spyder one much noiser?

Snip a diode out of the PSE relay. You retain use of the button and the exhaust is loud all the way through the rev range / speed range.smile

Even with it unplugged it's only loud if you want it to be.

I very rarely drive around in 'unsociable' hours, whatever they may be, and even then unless you give it loads of welly it's no louder than say an F360.

I'd say the clatter from my diesel snotter is louder and no ones complained about that.

This thread shows the diode snip approach - http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...
